Autumn is a season of harvest, and it is equally suited to new growth. If you missed taking cuttings in spring, then you must not miss autumn. Take advantage of the upcoming National Day holiday and join Qiu Ma in taking flower cuttings. It is not about saving money, but about fun.

Let me share a few flowers that are especially suited to cuttings in this season. Qiu Ma is a bit lazy, so what I offer are the simplest, most hassle-free versions. Those pursuing perfection should refer to them with caution.

1. Hydrangea

If your hydrangea, like mine, has not been fully pruned yet, then take the National Day holiday as a chance to prune it and use the branches for cuttings. Branches at this time of year are relatively mature and sturdy, and less prone to black rot.

Hydrangea cutting method: Choose healthy hydrangea branches, take about 10 cm in length, keep 2 nodes, soak them briefly in rooting water or carbendazim, and insert them directly into garden soil. Given the current weather, roots should finish growing in about 1 month. Once you see new nodes sprouting and true leaves emerging on the cuttings, they can be transplanted.

Note: If you can, buy some specialized potting medium, following the principle of being loose and breathable. If you do not have any, inserting directly into garden soil will have better water retention, so you will not need to water often. Choose a spot with good ventilation and scattered light for the ground planting, and just keep the soil slightly moist during this period.

2. Rose

Have you noticed that rose cuttings taken in summer are very prone to black rot? The main reason is that the temperature is hard to control. So do it in autumn instead, and just choose healthy post-bloom branches.

Rose cutting method: Just like with hydrangea, prepare the rose branches into 10 cm lengths keeping 2 nodes, and be sure to leave 2 true leaves at the top. This is crucial, as it helps with photosynthesis. Soak in rooting water, then choose a loose, breathable medium. Personal recommendation: perlite + vermiculite at a 1:1 ratio. Insert the rose branches after the medium is moistened, place in a spot with scattered light. After one week, spray the leaves with carbendazim diluted in water. Roots form in about 20 days.

3. Snake Plant

Snake plants are relatively cheap; you can basically buy a pot for around 15 yuan. But if you already have one at home, take a leaf from it and you can absolutely propagate it yourself. Roots form relatively easily in this season.

Snake plant cutting method: Choose a sturdy, thick leaf and cut it into pieces about 6 cm long, then leave them in a ventilated spot to dry for about one hour. Apply rooting powder to the cut surface, choose loose, breathable soil, water it thoroughly, then insert the leaf with the downward-facing end 2-3 cm into the soil. Place in a ventilated spot that does not get rained on, keep the medium slightly moist, and roots will form in about 1 month.

4. Christmas Cactus

The Christmas cactus is actually a very easy flower to keep alive; it basically belongs to the category of plants that will survive just by being stuck in a pot. However, compared with other plants, its rooting is a bit slower.

Christmas cactus cutting method: Choose about 4 healthy nodes, not ones that have aged. Leave them in a ventilated, shaded spot for about 1 day to let the wound dry. Before planting, apply a little rooting powder to the cut surface, prepare leaf mold soil, insert the branches 2-3 cm deep, spray water to make the soil slightly moist, and place in a ventilated spot with scattered light. The Christmas cactus will root in about 2 months.

The four above are varieties that Qiu Ma has tried personally and that are relatively easy to propagate from cuttings. Flower lovers who enjoy taking cuttings can give them a try, and you are also welcome to leave a comment sharing your own cutting tips, so that more flower lovers can grow their flowers well!
