Scale insects are not only common when growing orchids; they are also often seen on other flowers and plants. This is a pest with great harm and strong resistance to pesticides. For scale insects, prevention comes first and treatment comes after.

Every winter, scale insects overwinter in cold-protected places such as weeds and fallen leaves, and when spring turns warm they climb onto host plants to reproduce. Therefore, Haoshe Farmer always starts controlling scale insects from winter and spring.

When growing orchids normally, promptly cut off diseased plants and dead leaves. The old pseudobulb area especially must be cleaned thoroughly so that they have no place to overwinter. Severe cold is the natural enemy of scale insects. When spring turns warm, remove the moss covering the pot surface and spray once with a pesticide for killing scale insects, generally using pesticides such as Miejieling.

From late spring to autumn is the damage period for scale insects. When signs of scale insects are found, first remove the infected leaves and destroy them by fire. On the pot surface, you can spread poisonous soil made of Miejieling and fine sand, so that when the nymphs fall, they will be killed by the poisonous soil.

The hickory trees at Haoshe Farmer's home were once infected by scale insects, with a patch of white powder on the trunks that looked terrifying. It was only after asking at the agricultural technology station that we learned it was scale insects. Under their guidance, we first scraped the white powder off the trunks clean. Once the scale insect nymphs fell into the soil, they could no longer climb up the tree. Finally, we sprayed the trunks wet with pesticide for killing scale insects. Only in this way could it be thoroughly controlled.

As long as prevention is done well every winter and spring, the chance of scale insect outbreaks will be much lower, and then with timely handling and pesticide use, it will not cause large-area pest damage.
