The bougainvillea has grown too tall. After pruning, branches grow out from the cut. How should I prune it? The place I pruned before grew branches, and then it grew too tall. I'm asking how to prune it properly.

If the bougainvillea grows new branches without flower buds and doesn't bloom, you must prune it in time. If you don't prune it, its branches will grow very long and keep growing. When its flowering season comes, after it produces flower buds, it will only bloom at the top. The lower part of an overly long branch is all leaves with no flower buds, and the flowers at the top don't look good either. So, if the bougainvillea you're growing hasn't produced flower buds but instead has produced branches, just prune it in time once it reaches a certain size. There's no need to let it grow too long, because that affects its looks and also affects the amount of blooming.

The pruning method for bougainvillea is very simple. Each time it grows side buds that are not flower buds, once it reaches two or three pairs of leaves, just cut off the top directly. After cutting it off, the remaining part will gradually age and harden. Once the branch has aged enough, it will grow side buds from between the leaf axils of the few leaves you kept. After the side buds appear, cut them off in the same way again, and keep repeating this cycle. We can also make it produce flower buds by controlling water. By then, once there are enough side buds, the more flowers will come out, and the more it will bloom.

So pruning bougainvillea is not difficult at all, and there's no special technique. When side buds grow, just leave two to three pairs of leaves and cut them off directly. Of course, if what you're growing is a bonsai-style stump, it's best to prune according to the shape of the bonsai stump. For ordinary plants grown normally, just prune off the side buds directly as soon as they appear.
