Orchid growers fear nothing more than problems with orchid leaves, which not only affect the plant's appearance but may also lead to disease infection. So, do you know why orchid leaves develop various problems?

Observant orchid growers may notice that orchid leaf tips often show two conditions: yellowing tips and blackening tips. These are actually two different symptoms, but many beginner growers lump them together, which is wrong.

This article discusses the yellowing orchid leaf tips that netizens often ask about. These two conditions have also been discussed separately in previous articles by Haoshe Farmer. The biggest cause of yellowing leaf tips is likely a lack of water. In a dry environment, especially when the potting medium is on the dry side, the orchid plant will draw water and nutrients from its fleshy roots. When the fleshy roots supply water to the plant but cannot replenish it from the outside in time, the leaf tips will slowly turn yellow until they dry up.

The photo above shows a wild Cymbidium faberi. The mountain forest where it grows has been developed, and what was once full of tall pine trees is now completely bare. In summer, with no tree cover at all, only a single oil tea tree about 10 m away can shield it from the sun, but it cannot block the midday sun. Adding to this, its location is near the mountaintop and the soil is quite dry. We cannot help but admire the vitality of wild orchids - even in such an environment, it is still alive. But the leaf tips, and even more than half of the leaves, show the yellowing signs that netizens describe - it is easy to understand that this is caused by lack of water and excessive sun exposure.

The photo above is from Haoshe Farmer's own orchid greenhouse. Leaves like this rarely develop yellowing tips, because there is shade netting and the humidity inside the greenhouse is sufficient. Only during the plum rain season do some leaf tips turn black. Through these two comparisons, you now know the cause of yellowing leaf tips.

An orchid with yellowing leaf tips is reminding you that it is time to increase humidity or water it. If the leaves also show signs of yellowing, you should apply a light nitrogen fertilizer to promote chlorophyll production.
