"First, turn yourself into the person you want to be, and then you will meet someone you don't need to please." It turns out this saying is true. In 2016, without any warning, I met Bao Wen in Dali, the one destined for me.
It must be fate that let two people with the same hobby but from completely different places and with different life experiences travel across mountains and rivers to meet. We had no dragging, tangled plotlines; once we understood each other, we cherished each other.
Together in Dali, over the course of a year, we turned a 20-mu patch of wasteland into a succulent garden with more than 2000 varieties, bit by bit, with our own hands.
Every day, with our backs to Cangshan and facing Erhai, we look out over the fields, with blue sky and white clouds overhead, breathe fresh air, plant succulents and accompany them as they grow and change, eat the melons, fruits, and vegetables we grow ourselves, keep pet cats and dogs, raise poultry, chickens, ducks, and geese, drink delicious rice wine brewed from mountain spring water, and taste wild game and mountain delicacies raised in the mountain forests. We work at sunrise and rest at sunset, watch the clouds surge past, and admire the star-filled sky. Everything is in its most natural and healthy form.
In this more than a year of growing succulents, we have met many like-minded friends. They came to our Dali Mushi Garden from different places all over the world, gathered with us to admire the succulents under the blue sky and white clouds, made all kinds of succulent floral crafts, and ate and drank the same things we did. Everything that passed our lips was ecological food grown and raised by us at Mushi. Mushi Garden is a pure land for everyone, washing away the fatigue of the city, slowing down, and quietly enjoying the time that should belong to oneself.
More and more friends came, and they all said: why don't you run a guesthouse, so when we come we won't have to bother finding accommodation. Everyone enthusiastically offered ideas and made plans for us. We listened, we thought, and we could not let down every friend who trusted Mushi, nor could we go against our original intention of returning to our roots.
We had always been preparing, always learning. We had seen many so-called succulent homestays in China, but none could ever reach the standard in our hearts. Fortunately, with mutual understanding, we said: "Since we cannot wait for others to create the world we want, then let's do it ourselves!"
Yes, just like that, through the accumulation of countless drops of our sweat, we built a house that truly belongs to succulents! Right below Cangshan, beside Erhai, 300 m from our 20-mu Mushi Succulent Garden, a house with a 7000 sq m succulent garden, and that's not all, the courtyard, the balcony of every room, succulents everywhere.
This vertical succulent wall, we had it prepared half a year in advance!
The succulent lovers who come most like to stay in their rooms zoning out and relaxing, getting close to the succulents and watching the ever-changing clouds over Cangshan.
When you wake in the morning, the succulents and the sunlight are both there
Every room has its own view from the window, and of course the indispensable succulents.
But we cannot capture the full view of the 7000 sq m succulent garden, so we can only photograph some corners for everyone to enjoy.
Give the succulents some time. Half a year later, a year later, we will come back and see how they have changed.
These lovely succulents were all planted one by one by our own hands
Look at my hands, darker than a man's, haha
When the busy work is done and things quiet down, soaking in a bath with lavender we grew ourselves, and the worry about getting tanned is forgotten again...
In this succulent house, we sit with the friends who come and watch the wind and clouds rise over Cangshan, make succulent floral crafts together, have afternoon tea, carry baskets on our backs to pick vegetables in the fields and cook, have a barbecue... enjoying ourselves immensely. We even hold the Torch Festival on the 1000 sq m lawn of the succulent house.
On the day of the Torch Festival, nearly 40 friends from various cities came to Mushi to celebrate together
Mr. Bao personally lit the torch
We welcome like-minded friends from all over the country. In the sea of succulents, in the pastoral scenery, on the lawn, in the dining room, in the courtyard, under the blue sky and white clouds, below Cangshan, beside Erhai, in the wind, under the moon, be the self you want to be, relaxed and unhurried, and the story writes itself.
We insist on restoring simplicity, striving for the highest good, and upholding a craftsman's heart. We hope this house, with succulents as its medium, conveys a return to one's original heart, self-recognition, the courage to realize one's dreams, and a serious and healthy attitude toward life. This is also our pursuit of a return to natural living
All things have their natural rhythm. Growing succulents, making a succulent garden, running a succulent homestay, none of it is simple. It takes a great deal of time, to experience, to explore, to learn, to stumble and learn lessons, to suddenly understand.
But if you do not take the time to create the life you want, you will ultimately have to spend a great deal of time dealing with the life you do not want.
