The azalea is one of China's seven famous flowers, with an extremely large number of varieties, bright blossoms, and lush branches and leaves. Its ornamental value is extremely high, making it a great choice for embellishing a courtyard. A poem once praised it this way: "Casually break off two branches in hand, look closely and it seems not of this world. Among flowers this one is Xishi; hibiscus and peony are all Mo Mu." In the poem, the azalea is compared to Xishi, the greatest beauty of ancient times, which shows just how beautiful the azalea is.

Azalea Growing Methods
1. Environmental conditions:
Azaleas like a cool environment and require a shady, ventilated spot. In summer, when the sunlight is strong and the temperature is high, they must be placed under a shade awning or in the shade of trees; in winter, they should be kept indoors, with the temperature maintained above 5°C.
2. Watering principles:
Follow the principle of "do not water until dry, and when watering, water thoroughly," and strictly avoid partial watering that leaves the middle of the root ball dry. Rainwater must be used for watering. If tap water is used, it must be left to stand in the sun before use, so as not to damage the root system. Compared with other indoor potted plants, this is much stricter. Generally, in spring and autumn, water once every 2~3 days; in summer, 1~2 times a day, and it is not advisable to water at noon.
3. Fertilizing and potting soil:
Azaleas prefer loose, highly permeable, well-draining acidic soil rich in humus. Generally, decomposed cake fertilizer, fish scraps, and the like are rotted and then diluted with water for irrigation.
Two
Precautions
1. Placement location:
There are particular requirements for where potted azaleas are placed. Generally, they should be placed on a southeast-facing balcony, and the spot must be ventilated. Move them as little as possible. Without ventilation, they are prone to black spot disease and will drop leaves in large numbers.
2. Removing and thinning leaves:
Thin buds and leaves in time, removing part of the flower buds and leaves that have grown too numerous and too dense, so that air can circulate and nutrients are concentrated in the flower buds. After the flower buds form, increase nutrition and apply a moderate amount of extra phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, otherwise the flower buds will turn into leaf buds.
3. Repotting and changing soil:
This does not need to be done every year, generally once every 2 to 3 years. Damage the root hairs as little as possible. The time should be after the flowers fade or in autumn, and at the same time spray Thiophanate to prevent disease.
4. The main reasons for azalea leaf drop and failure to bloom are
: too strong direct sunlight in summer, frost damage from severe cold, too much watering, too concentrated fertilizer, being kept indoors for too long, being placed in a spot with no air circulation or in a dark, damp place, exposure to acid rain, and so on. Therefore, these situations should be avoided during care.
