We all call the tree peony the national flower, it is simply breathtaking, but there is a medicinal plant called the herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora), and if it is well cared for, it is even several times more beautiful than the tree peony. If you don't believe it, come and see how it is cared for.

Light

It likes sunlight and tolerates slight shade. Generally, grown outdoors or placed on a sunny balcony, it grows quickly and blooms abundantly.

Temperature

It is cold-hardy, prefers a cool climate, and dislikes intense heat. In the northern regions of China, it can overwinter with soil mounded over it for cold protection.

Soil

It is easy to plant in fertile, deep, well-drained sandy loam; it can also be grown in clay and sandy soil, but saline-alkali land and low-lying beds are not suitable for planting.

Fertilizing

The herbaceous peony loves heavy feeding, so topdressing should be applied once before sprouting, once before flowering, and once in autumn. When planting, apply sufficient base fertilizer, with 2-4 kg of barnyard manure per plant, or 3-5 kg of leaf mold. Apply topdressing once before and once after flowering; apply phosphorus fertilizer before flowering, and after flowering apply decomposed liquid fertilizer or dried sesame residue fertilizer. In late autumn, apply one more dose of Huadongde flower nutrient solution.

For regular nutrient maintenance, you can use an organic nutrient solution fermented from sugarcane stalks. It is rich and balanced in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and has various organic matter, amino acids, and minerals added, promoting root growth, bud sprouting, root bursting, and more blooms.

Watering

It likes moisture. After division and planting, water thoroughly once, and water 1-2 times before flowering. In spring, water once promptly to revive growth, and in winter water thoroughly for overwintering, but avoid waterlogging.

Pest and disease control

When affected by brown spot disease, small pale yellow-green spots appear on the leaves, which gradually expand into brown concentric rings. The control method is to spray a 500-fold zineb solution and cut off and burn the affected parts. When affected by leaf spot disease, small dark brown spots appear on the leaves, then expand into irregular concentric rings, and finally brown lesions form.

The control method is: spray an equal-amount Bordeaux mixture. If scale insects occur, spray a 1000-fold dimethoate solution for control.

The herbaceous peony is somewhat similar to the tree peony, but it is not a tree peony. With the care of Huadongde flower nutrient solution, it not only becomes greener, but its flowers also become fuller, larger, and the flowering period is longer, so its beauty can surpass that of the tree peony several times over.
