Introduction

Potted green plants are essential decorative touches for home life. Keeping some flowers and plants at home has many benefits: it beautifies the room and pleases the mood. "Flower Sound Potted Plant Diary, Issue 1323" introduces you to a new type of houseplant.

Today's featured plant

Plants that can be grown indoors, such as pothos, fiddle-leaf fig, and money tree, are mostly foliage plants because of insufficient light, and they do not bloom. The flower introduced in this issue is called kangaroo fern, a new type of indoor green plant that not only has beautiful leaves but also produces pretty flowers.

Kangaroo fern

Kangaroo fern, also known as goldfish plant, is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Nematanthus in the family Gesneriaceae. It is native to Central America and is now found worldwide as an ornamental plant. Its flowers are very peculiar, round and plump, like a kangaroo's belly and also like an ornamental little goldfish, hence the name. It has been introduced in both northern and southern parts of China, mostly as private potted plants.

Beautiful in both flower and leaf

The leaves of the kangaroo fern are ovate and thick, and it is essentially a type of succulent. It is evergreen all year round with a glossy sheen, and is itself an excellent foliage plant. Together with its peculiar flowers, it is like adding embellishment to perfection. The small pink flowers are scattered among the emerald green leaves, beautiful in both flower and leaf, good for viewing foliage and enjoying flowers.

Super easy to grow

The kangaroo fern is the easiest houseplant I have ever seen to grow. Its branches are trailing and have aerial roots, rooting and growing wherever they crawl. A snapped-off branch thrown into the ground can survive. Through division, one pot can become a large patch in a year, with extremely strong reproductive capacity. Daily care is also very easy: it is shade-tolerant and drought-tolerant, and it is fine not to water it for ten days or eight days, making it easier to grow than pothos and spider plant.

Blooms readily

The flowering period of the kangaroo fern is not fixed. As long as the temperature is suitable and care is proper, it can bloom in all four seasons, opening wave after wave, which is very rare among shade-tolerant plants. Some flower enthusiasts ask why theirs does not bloom. It is suggested to apply a little phosphorus fertilizer, place it on the balcony, and give it some indirect light, and it will soon form buds. It is beautiful in both flower and leaf. It has not been long since it was introduced to China, yet it has already won over many flower enthusiasts and is well worth having.
