Flowering Period The flowering period of Cymbidium sinense is late winter to early spring, that is, from October to March of the following year. There are many varieties, and a few bloom in autumn. Cymbidium sinense is also called Baosui Lan or Rusui Lan, because its flowering period falls right at the Great Cold season, the end of the 24 solar terms, and it blooms every year in January of the Gregorian calendar.

Cymbidium sinense has abundant varieties, elegant flowers, and upright flower stems. It is very fresh and beautiful, and when paired with a plain container, it looks even more refined.

If you want to care well for Cymbidium sinense, you need to know its growing habits. In care, pay attention to keeping it warm and humid, avoid freezing, and also pay attention to maintaining a certain amount of fertilization and light, avoiding dryness.

How to care for Cymbidium sinense indoors?

1. Potting mix preparation:

The soil requirements for Cymbidium sinense are soil rich in humus and slightly acidic. You can choose a loose, breathable mix that drains well and retains fertilizer, such as leaf mold from the forest, coarse sand from rivers, sawdust, charcoal powder, tree bark, crushed brick pieces, etc.

2. Orchid pot selection:

Commonly used orchid pots include clay pots, hollow pots, and plastic pots, which are suitable for use on the ground as well as on balconies, rooftops, and indoors. In home orchid growing, the main purpose is ornamental decoration, so purple clay pots or plastic pots should be used for planting orchids. Special purple clay pots for orchids mostly have holes at the bottom, drain water and breathe well, and have distinctive shapes. Plastic pots are deep, have many holes, are lightweight, neat, easy to move, and reduce pressure on floors.

3. Light:

Orchids prefer a semi-shaded environment and avoid dryness. In winter, sunlight is weak, and in spring, sunlight is soft, which is suitable for orchid growth, so full light can be accepted. From early summer to mid-autumn, the sunshine duration is long and the light intensity is strong, which is unfavorable for orchid growth, so shading is needed. It is suitable to place them in a shaded spot under trees or under the eaves, or in a place where sunlight can be seen in the morning and evening, and after 9 o'clock in the morning in a place where sunlight may not be seen, or where there is skylight but no direct sunlight.

4. Temperature:

For orchids to sprout, take root, and grow, the suitable temperature is 20°C~28°C. Below 20°C, growth is slow; above 25°C, growth is rapid; at 30°C, they are forced into a dormant state. With 10°C~16°C during the day and 5°C~10°C at night, this is the winter dormancy period. Cymbidium sinense can tolerate a low temperature limit of minus 2°C. Home orchid growing mostly involves overwintering indoors, and in winter there is no need to take heating measures, so they can safely pass through the severe cold period. If overwintering in a wind-sheltered spot in a courtyard or on a balcony, plastic film can be used to build a temporary greenhouse.

5. Humidity:

The air humidity needed for growing orchids is 60%-80% during the growing period, and no lower than 50% during winter dormancy; different orchid species have different requirements for air humidity. In spring, temperatures are low and water evaporates slowly, so generally a misting method can be used, which can both increase the air humidity indoors or in the orchid shed and wash the orchid leaves, making them fresh and green.

6. Fertilization:

Fertilizing Cymbidium sinense should be "suitable to be light and avoid being concentrated." Generally, it starts in late spring and stops in late autumn. When fertilizing, the temperature should preferably be 10°C-25°C, and fertilization is not suitable on cloudy and rainy days. As for fertilizer types, either organic fertilizer or inorganic fertilizer can be used. During the growing season, fertilize once a week. In autumn and winter, Cymbidium sinense grows slowly, so fertilizer should be reduced, applying once every 20 days. After fertilizing, spray a small amount of clean water to prevent the fertilizer solution from sticking to and dirtying the leaves. Fertilization must be carried out on a clear evening; fertilizing on cloudy days risks root rot.

To care for Cymbidium sinense, it is best to water with soft water. Common rainwater or tap water left to sit for 3 days is fine. When watering, be careful not to let water remain in the leaf center, and even more so, do not spray it on the flower buds.

Cymbidium sinense prefers warmth and avoids severe cold, and prefers moisture while avoiding dryness. It mostly grows in sunny, rain-rich dense forests. Its light compensation point for photosynthesis is about half of spring morning light. Cymbidium sinense should properly receive more sunlight, especially the morning light before 9 a.m., which is very beneficial to orchid growth and flowering.

Cymbidium sinense blooms more than once a year, but the flowering period is earlier or later depending on the temperature. Cymbidium sinense blooms around the Spring Festival and blooms together with Cymbidium goeringii. In fact, some Cymbidium sinense bloom in autumn, such as Qiubang and Qiuxiang. Some bloom in late winter and early spring, such as the Daming series orchids. When Cymbidium sinense blooms is greatly related to temperature: when the temperature is high, it blooms early, and when the temperature is low, it blooms late. At this time, as Cymbidium sinense blooms, praising its character and inspired by it, one grows even fonder of Cymbidium sinense for not following worldly ways, for its quiet fragrance in solitude, and for alone preserving noble elegance.
