Roses look worse the more they grow? Prune them in time and they will soon burst out of the pot

010. Do roses look worse the more they grow? Why not give them a snip, and they will soon burst out of the pot!
The one thing you absolutely cannot skip when growing roses is pruning. I wonder if you have ever felt this way: your roses look uglier the more they grow, and their shape becomes more and more deformed. In fact, all of this is caused by improper pruning. So how exactly should you prune them?
To do a good job of pruning roses, we first need to understand why we prune roses.
The benefits of pruning roses
Roses bloom on new growth. If you do not prune them, the canes will grow longer and longer and thinner and thinner, and the flowers they produce will get worse and worse.
At the same time, if the canes of roses grow too fast, it also causes poor ventilation and shading inside the plant, making it prone to pests and diseases.
Pruning, however, can make the rose's shape more graceful, and it can also make the plant shorter and more compact. The flowers it produces will naturally improve a great deal as well, and the frequency of pests and diseases can also be reduced.
Basic pruning methods for roses
Before pruning roses, Lanyao suggests you prepare a pair of thorn-proof gloves, which can reduce the chance of your hands being pricked. In the past, Lanyao did not like wearing gloves, and every time after pruning roses, my hands could be described as covered in cuts...
The principle of pruning roses is to cut off dead canes, weak canes and diseased canes. When pruning after flowering, first cut off the spent flowers. Spent flowers have already lost their ornamental value, but they still consume a large amount of energy, so they should be cut off first.
When cutting off spent flowers, you can cut the cane back appropriately according to its length. For shorter canes, you can cut off the spent flower together with one set of 5 leaflets. If the cane is longer, you can cut it back to 1/2 of its length. Properly shortening the canes can make roses grow thicker and sturdier.
After pruning, apply fertilizer promptly. When fertilizer and water are sufficient, the new shoots of roses often produce multiple flower buds. If the plant is relatively weak, it is recommended to remove the small flower buds and keep only the largest one. If the plant is relatively strong, you do not need to thin the buds. But be sure to apply fertilizer to maintain sufficient fertility.
How to prune young rose plants
Many people do not know how to prune young rose plants, so they simply do not prune them at all. In fact, young rose plants should also be pruned. Proper pruning can make young rose plants grow quickly and become sturdy.
After a rooted rose cutting sprouts, once the cane grows to about 10cm, you can pinch it once. Through pinching, the rose will soon send out new canes again. When the new canes grow to about 8cm, pinch them again.
After pinching two or three times in this way, the shape of the young rose plant will become full and lush.
Winter pruning of roses
Winter pruning of roses is an important means of changing the shape of the plant. In winter, after roses enter dormancy, remove all the leaves and then prune.
First cut off diseased canes, dead canes and weak canes, keeping only 3-5 thick, sturdy canes, then observe the buds on the canes.
Calculate the number of buds you want to keep, then prune. Keep 1-2 plump buds on each cane.
Note that in winter pruning, the buds you keep should face outward as much as possible, so that the plant shape will look better when they grow out later. If you keep inward-facing buds, the canes will grow inward in the future and become crossing canes, affecting the overall shape of the rose.
At the same time, when pruning, also note that the buds you keep should preferably be kept basically at the same horizontal level, so that they sprout neatly in spring and bloom neatly as well. Of course, for more advanced pruning, you also need to adjust the height at which buds are reserved according to how sturdy the canes are.
Thick, sturdy canes can be cut a little shorter, while slightly weaker canes can be left a little taller, so that the new canes will grow more evenly in the future.
