Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival

Autumn

Like wine

Mellow and rich

Years pass slowly

Turning back to look again

No more joy or sorrow

Past events like fireworks remain the same

Only friendship flows long like water

Fate binds us, all the way with you by my side

Morning glow against rosy clouds, wandering in the rain

When red leaves are thick, we shall meet again

Tasting tea, discussing wine, admiring stones, reminiscing

Fallen petals everywhere, clouds unfurl their sleeves

Laughter and joy without end

The setting sun hangs on the branch

Seeing through the mortal world

Nothing more to seek

Quietly waiting

Autumn

"Drinking Alone Under the Moon"

Tang Dynasty - Li Bai

A pot of wine among the flowers, I drink alone with no companion.

Raising my cup, I invite the bright moon, and with my shadow we become three.

The moon does not know how to drink, and my shadow only follows my body.

For now, with the moon and my shadow as companions, I must enjoy myself while it is spring.

I sing, and the moon lingers; I dance, and my shadow scatters.

"Quiet Night Thoughts"

Tang Dynasty - Li Bai

Moonlight before my bed, suspected to be frost on the ground.

I raise my head to gaze at the bright moon, I lower my head and think of my hometown.

"Looking at the Moon and Longing for One Far Away"

Tang Dynasty - Zhang Jiuling

The bright moon rises over the sea, and at this moment we share it from afar.

Lovers resent the long night, and all night long their yearning arises!

I blow out the candle and cherish the full moonlight, I put on my coat and feel the dew soak through.

I cannot bear to give it to you by the handful, so I return to bed to dream of a beautiful reunion.

"Thinking of My Brothers on a Moonlit Night"

Tang Dynasty - Du Fu

The garrison drums cut off all passage, and in the border autumn a single wild goose calls.

The dew turns white from tonight, and the moon is brightest in my hometown.

I have brothers, but all are scattered, and with no home, who can ask if they live or die.

Letters sent long fail to arrive, and moreover the fighting has not stopped.

"Thoughts Under the Moon on an Autumn Night"

Tang Dynasty - Meng Haoran

In the autumn sky the bright moon hangs, its radiance wet with dew.

Startled magpies have not yet settled, and flying fireflies enter through the rolled-up curtain.

"Looking at the Moon from the Pen Pavilion on the Night of the Fifteenth of the Eighth Month"

Tang Dynasty - Bai Juyi

In past years on the night of the fifteenth of the eighth month, by the banks of the Qujiang Pool beside the Apricot Garden.

This year on the night of the fifteenth of the eighth month, in front of the water pavilion at the sandbar of Penpu.

Gazing northwest toward home, where is it? Looking southeast at the moon, how many times has it been full?

Last night the wind blew and no one understood, tonight the clear light is like years past.

"Looking at the Moon on the Night of the Fifteenth"

Tang Dynasty - Wang Jian

In the courtyard the ground is white, crows roost in the trees, and the cold dew silently wets the osmanthus.

Tonight the moon is bright and everyone gazes at it, but who knows whose home the autumn longing falls upon

"The Mid-Autumn Moon"

Song Dynasty - Yan Shu

Ten rounds of frosty shadows turn through the courtyard parasol tree, and on this night the traveler alone faces the corner.

Perhaps the Moon Goddess has no regret, the jade toad is cold and the osmanthus alone.

"Seeing the Moon at Mid-Autumn and Harmony for Ziyou"

Song Dynasty - Su Shi

The bright moon easily sinks and people easily scatter, returning I call for wine to look again.

Before the hall the moonlight grows ever clearer and finer, and cicadas chirr in the dew-covered grass.

Rolling up the curtain and pushing open the door, all is silent with no one, and beneath the window only the babbling of the old man of Chu.

Do not be ashamed of poverty as an official in the southern capital, how many people write poems facing the moon.

"Prelude to Water Melody"

Song Dynasty - Su Shi

When will the bright moon appear? I raise my cup and ask the blue sky.

I do not know the palaces in the sky, what year it is tonight

I wish to ride the wind and return, but I fear the jade towers and jade halls, so high up one cannot bear the cold.

Dancing to make clear shadows, how does it compare to being in the mortal world

Turning round the vermilion pavilion, lowering through the carved windows, shining on the sleepless.

There should be no resentment, why does it always round when people part

People have sorrow and joy, parting and reunion, the moon has bright and dim, waxing and waning, this matter has always been hard to perfect.

I only wish people long endure, and share the fair moon though a thousand miles apart.

"The River All Red - Sending Far on Mid-Autumn"

Song Dynasty - Xin Qiji

Quickly ascend the west tower, lest the sky release floating clouds to cover the moon.

But call for the jade-white hand and the flute across, blowing a single note that splits it.

Who makes the ice-jar float the world, most pity the season when the jade axe repairs it.

Ask Chang'e, lonely and cold, is there sorrow or not, her hair should have turned white.

Jade liquid fills, the jade cup is smooth.

Long sleeves rise, the clear song chokes.
