Why do peony buds turn yellow after the peony is moved outdoors in spring? This is most likely the reason

26. Note: after a peony is moved outdoors in spring, the buds all turn yellow, and this is most likely the reason!
This is an excerpt from Lan Yao's original "Peony Cultivation" column article
Although peonies are cold-hardy, in the cold regions of the north, winter protection should still be done well. Potted peonies in the north are often moved indoors for care during winter.
Move them indoors around the beginning of winter and place them in a cold room without heating, keeping the temperature at around 0°C and providing plenty of light. Never place them in a heated room; the temperature in a heated room is relatively high, and the peony cannot complete vernalization, which will affect flowering.
If peonies are moved indoors for care around the beginning of winter, then when should they be moved outdoors?
Generally speaking, the time to move peonies outdoors should not be too early. In early spring, temperatures are unstable, alternating between cold and warm, and moving peonies outdoors too early may very likely cause the peony buds to catch a chill, turn yellow and drop.
So generally around Qingming, once the temperature is relatively stable, move the peonies outdoors for care.
In regions that are not too cold, peonies do not need to be moved indoors in winter; simply plant them together with the pot in a wind-sheltered, sunny spot.
After buds appear in spring, dig out the pot, clean it off, and care for it normally for viewing.
In warm regions, potted peonies can simply be left outdoors in the open ground to overwinter in winter. If you are worried that winter rain will make the potting soil too wet, you can cover the surface of the pot with plastic film, then cover it with straw. Covering with plastic film is to avoid too much rain, and covering with straw is to shade light so that the potting soil temperature does not get too high.
