How to Grow Water Caltrop (Bull's Head Caltrop)? Detailed Planting Methods and Techniques

Choose a pond or the edge of a lake with relatively fertile silt and relatively low-lying terrain; the underwater silt should be about 20 cm deep. Apply fertilizer in advance before planting, divide the caltrop pond into lengthwise rows according to its terrain, keeping the row spacing at 2.8 m to 3.3 m. During sowing, the water level should be kept at 85 to 100 cm, and the seed caltrops can simply be scattered evenly into the water.

I. Choosing the Caltrop Pond

When growing water caltrop (bull's head caltrop), choose ponds, river bends, relatively low-lying water surfaces, or lake edges with a water depth of 0.3 to 4 m, relatively fertile silt, relatively small wind and waves, and gentle water flow; the underwater silt should be about 20 cm deep.

II. Sowing Method

Before growing water caltrop (bull's head caltrop), apply fertilizer in advance; you can apply pig manure or decomposed mud manure. When planting, first divide the caltrop pond into lengthwise rows according to its terrain, with row spacing of 2.8 m to 3.3 m. Insert bamboo poles at both ends of the caltrop pond and stretch ropes between them as markers, then use a boat to scatter the seed caltrops evenly into the water along the ropes. During sowing, the water level should be kept at 85 to 100 cm; after the caltrop seedlings grow above the water surface, gradually deepen the water level.
