It's autumn again, and all of you who love roses shouldn't miss this great season for taking rose cuttings.

In autumn, roses are pruned once, so why not take this chance to exchange some rose variety stems with fellow flower lovers and try taking cuttings yourself. You can also root your own roses into small plants and share them with fellow flower lovers. It's endless fun! You might say, I don't know how to take cuttings, and they never survive! No worries, follow Lanyao's method and your rose cuttings are sure to live.

Taking rose cuttings is very simple. Lanyao breaks it down into 6 steps.

1. Choosing the stem

For rose cuttings, choose fairly robust semi-lignified stems. Do not use old stems; old stems have less auxin and are not easy to root.

It's best to use stems that have just finished blooming. If conditions allow, fellow flower lovers can first cut off the spent flowers, then wait a week before cutting the stems, so the stems can accumulate more nutrients.

2. Trimming the stem

Trimming the cuttings also takes some care. Many fellow flower lovers cut a very long stem for cuttings, which is wrong. If the stem is too long, it uses up too much before rooting and is less likely to survive.

The correct way is to keep only 2-3 buds per cutting. The lower bud is for rooting and is the hidden point for future shoots, and the upper bud will sprout into stems in the future.

When trimming, the upper cut should be flat and the lower cut at a 45-degree angle, keeping only 2-4 small leaves for photosynthesis.

3. Disinfection

Sterilizing and disinfecting is a fairly important step in taking cuttings. It's recommended that after trimming the cuttings, soak them all in potassium permanganate water for 20 minutes. The concentration of the potassium permanganate water is best when it is light purple. A carbendazim solution also works.

4. Mixing the soil

The soil mix for cuttings should be loose and breathable. The main thing is that it must not contain fertilizer. Soil with fertilizer easily causes the stems to rot black when the temperature is high. If the temperature is fairly low, it will be better.

To ensure survival, Lanyao recommends using plain soil for cuttings, without fertilizer. You can mix peat and perlite at 1:1 and take cuttings in that.

You can also take cuttings in pure perlite or pure vermiculite, but with these two methods, when transplanting, the plants are often transplanted bare-root, and sometimes they rot black after transplanting.

5. Taking the cuttings

When taking cuttings, be careful not to damage the cut ends. If the soil mix has many hard particles, first poke a hole in the soil with a wooden stick, then put the stem into the hole, then water thoroughly so the soil and stem fit tightly together.

6. Care after taking cuttings

After taking cuttings, how should you care for them? Many fellow flower lovers don't quite understand how often to water. Actually, it's very simple.

After taking cuttings, put the pot in tree shade, or a place where it can get sun in the morning and evening, keep it ventilated, and water whenever you see the surface of the potting soil is dry.

Rose cuttings in autumn very easily survive. After they grow roots, just pot them up directly with the soil ball. When potting up, add plenty of base fertilizer, but be careful that the base fertilizer does not directly touch the roots. By the next spring, the small rose plants will be able to grow very large, and they can even bloom.

So? After reading this, don't you think it's very simple? Then get to work and give it a try!
