Organic Blueberry Cultivation Techniques in Dandong City, Liaoning Province

Dandong City, Liaoning Province is the northern starting point of China's coastline, located in the southeastern part of Liaoning Province. This region not only has excellent water quality but also possesses very rich forestry resources. According to statistics, the forest coverage rate in the Dandong area can reach 66%, and the overall ecological environment is in good condition, making it very suitable for growing organic blueberries.

1 Factors to Consider During Organic Blueberry Cultivation

1.1 Sunlight

Light duration and intensity are very important for the growth of organic blueberries. When light conditions can meet the growth requirements of organic blueberries, the fruit will mature at the appropriate time, and the sugar content and ripening rate will also be relatively good.

1.2 Water

The most suitable region for blueberry growth has an annual precipitation of 1200mm, ensuring that blueberries have sufficient water during the growing period and will not experience water shortage; monthly precipitation must exceed 100mm. Fruit that matures during the plum rain period has relatively poor fruit quality. A soil moisture content of around 70% is beneficial for organic blueberry flower bud formation, and will not cause poor flower bud development or root rot.

1.3 Soil

The soil pH for planting blueberries should be controlled below 6.0 and above 4.5. If the soil pH exceeds 6.5, it is neutral soil, and planting organic blueberries in it tends to result in poor growth and low survival rates. Therefore, neutral soil is not suitable for planting organic blueberries. In addition, it is necessary to ensure that the soil has good aeration and water retention.

2 Analysis of Key Points of Organic Blueberry Cultivation Techniques

2.1 Selecting a Suitable Cultivation Site

The overall ecological environment quality of the Dandong area is relatively good, and it has not suffered serious pollution; heavy metal content will not affect the growth of organic blueberries. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure fresh air and sufficient sunlight, and the soil should be acidic sandy soil with very good ventilation and water retention, with the content of various pollutants within standard levels; for example, CO 2 content less than 0.15mg/m2 per day, nitrogen oxide content less than 1mg/m2 per day, etc.

2.2 Planting High-Quality Seedlings

High-quality seedlings are the foundation for improving the survival rate of organic blueberry seedlings and fruit quality. Therefore, when planting, it is necessary to select organic blueberry varieties suitable for cultivation according to the geographical environment of the Dandong area. When selecting seedlings, the main consideration is whether the seedling root system is well developed and complete. If the roots are yellow-white, it proves that the seedling quality is relatively good and suitable for planting.

2.3 Improving the Soil

Improving the soil is essential work for planting organic blueberries. The main materials used include sawdust, rice husks, peat, etc. Ridge cultivation is carried out at the planting site, with a specific height of 30cm. Specific method: use 10~15m 3 of humus soil and 30~35m 3 of fermented sawdust per 667m2 to improve the soil, among which the amount of fermented sawdust is adjusted according to the soil viscosity; determine the amount of sulfur powder according to the pH value of the mixed soil; after spreading the soil improvement materials on the surface of the soil layer, form ridges, and the most suitable ridge top width is 70cm.

2.4 Management of the Planting Site

First, throughout the entire growth process of organic blueberries, from seedling planting to maturity, their water requirement goes from less to more, and then from more to less. The bud break stage of blueberries has the greatest need for water supplementation, followed by the flowering stage, fruit swelling stage, and finally the vegetative growth stage. In order to control soil moisture within an appropriate range, drip irrigation should be used to supply water. During the harvest period of blueberries, the water amount needs to be controlled.

Second, fertilization for organic blueberries mainly uses farmyard manure, namely cake fertilizer, compost, organic compound fertilizer, etc. Not only should chemical fertilizers be used in combination with organic fertilizers, but organic fertilizers should also be the main component. The final topdressing should be completed within 30d before organic blueberries enter the harvest period, and the ratio of organic nitrogen to inorganic nitrogen should be controlled within 1:1. Using the age of the blueberry tree as the basic reference condition, fertilization work should be carried out in stages: the 1st fertilization, mainly with nitrogen fertilizer, should be carried out within 10~15d before germination; the 2nd fertilization, mainly with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers, should be carried out in May after fruit set; the 3rd fertilization, mainly with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, should be carried out 10d before the harvest period, with the purpose of promoting fruit growth and improving fruit quality and yield.

2.5 Pest and Disease Control

Pests and diseases are very likely to occur throughout the entire growth period of crops. If they are not effectively controlled, they may affect crop yield in mild cases, or result in "a total crop failure" in severe cases. For organic blueberries, pest and disease control measures mainly include agricultural measures, physical measures, etc. Agricultural measures for disease prevention mainly refer to maintaining a certain degree of scientific rationality in planting, fertilizing, and watering to improve the resistance of the blueberries themselves. Physical control mainly refers to trapping insects through insect sticky boards. Chemical control refers to the use of targeted insecticides to reduce the impact of pests. Weeding work is mainly to prevent weeds from "sharing" the influence meant for organic blueberries; therefore, they need to be controlled within 20cm.

3 Conclusion

In short, to grow organic blueberries, it is necessary to choose a site with sufficient sunlight, low water impurities, and suitable soil viscosity, and to cultivate them in combination with the key points of organic blueberry cultivation techniques, so as to increase organic blueberry yield, ensure fruit quality, and promote the development of the organic blueberry industry in the Dandong area.
