"Can my home grow roses?"
The rose is a plant that loves light very much; you could say light is the number one factor determining whether your home is suitable for growing roses.
Full sun is the most suitable environment for growing roses, meaning more than 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Open terraces, balconies and gardens facing south can generally meet this condition.
A half-sun environment with only 4 hours of direct sunlight per day comes next, the amount of bloom and the speed of reblooming will be somewhat worse than roses grown in full sun, and there will be mild leggy growth, but through measures such as applying more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer and timely pruning, roses can still grow and bloom fairly healthily, soyou can also grow roses。

And if your home gets less than 4 hours of direct sunlight per day, then it is not very suitable for growing roses; the leggy growth problem will be very serious, and long-term lack of light will cause problems such as failure to bloom and weak growth.
If you are a flower lover with an enclosed balcony, you also need to take into account that sunlight becomes noticeably weaker after passing through glass, so if it is an enclosed balcony, at least a full-sun environment with more than 6 hours of direct sunlight is needed to be suitable for growing roses.

Besides light, ventilation is also an important factor determining whether your home is suitable for growing roses. If ventilation is very good, then pests and diseases on roses will be noticeably fewer, and care will be very worry-free.
But if ventilation is average, you must be prepared to battle pests and diseases on your roses; compared with a well-ventilated environment, red spider mites, powdery mildew and so on are more likely to break out in a poorly ventilated environment。
However, as long as you are attentive enough, regularly spray pesticides as preventive measures against pests and diseases, and ventilation is not too poor (for example, an enclosed balcony where the windows are not usually opened), you can grow roses.

"What are the differences between different rose varieties?"
Besides the directly visible differences in flower shape and color, different rose varieties also differ in attributes such as classification system, plant habit, blooming behavior, disease resistance and fragrance.
Understanding these attributes can help us more accurately choose the rose varieties that suit us.
Spirit of Freedom
According to classification systems, modern roses can generally be divided into 6 types: shrub roses, climbing roses, hybrid tea roses (HT roses), miniature roses, floribunda roses and ground-cover roses. Apart from their lineage, the main differences between roses of different systems are in plant habit and blooming habits.
For example, the ones we use for cut flowers are generally hybrid tea roses with an upright plant habit and longer flowering stems; the ones we use for flower walls are generally climbing roses with trailing branches; and the ones commonly used in green belts, with a low plant habit that grows close to the ground, are generally ground-cover roses.
But because the lineage of modern roses is too complex, one variety may belong to different systems at the same time, so when choosing varieties, a rough understanding of the classification system is enough; you should pay more attention to whether its plant height and blooming behavior meet your needs.
Parisienne
According to blooming behavior, roses can generally be divided into repeat-flowering varieties and once-flowering varieties.
Repeat-flowering varieties can bloom all year round as long as the climate is suitable, but because most regions of our country are too hot in summer, resulting in poor bloom quality, while in winter roses need to go dormant, the main blooming period is still concentrated in spring and autumn.
Once-flowering varieties bloom only in a concentrated burst in spring, and some varieties may have a few scattered repeat blooms in autumn. For example, the very familiar Eden Rose is a once-flowering variety.
Eden Rose
According to fragrance intensity, roses can generally be divided into strongly fragrant varieties, moderately fragrant varieties, and lightly fragrant/non-fragrant varieties.
Roses also have different fragrance types, including the seductiveDamaskold rose scent, the classicmyrrh scent, the sweetfruity scent, and the eleganttea scent。
That wonderful difference is hard to describe even with the most flowery words; only by holding a blooming rose in your own hands and smelling it can you begin to experience it.

Different rose varieties also differ in disease resistance, mainly resistance to black spot and resistance to powdery mildew.
Some varieties are very susceptible to black spot, such as Canary and Naples; some varieties are very susceptible to powdery mildew, such as Misaki and Violin Style; and a small number of varieties are extremely resistant to both black spot and powdery mildew and rarely get sick, such as Pompon Veranda and Novalis.
But if you are growing only a small number at home, even varieties with weak resistance need not worry you too much; regular preventive spraying can effectively control diseases.

"For balcony growers, what roses are suitable to plant?"
If you are a balcony grower, when growing roses you must first consider the problem of small space; not only must it fit the plant you just bought, you also need to reserve enough growing space for it.
Then it is more suitable to grow some small cut-flower varieties with an upright plant habit that are easy to control in height through pruning, or small shrub varieties with a short, sturdy habit and good branching.
Climbing varieties that spread and grow horizontally and large shrub varieties with a tall plant habit are not very suitable for balcony growers, and should be avoided as much as possible.

"If I want to make a flower wall, what varieties should I choose?"
If you want to grow a romantic flower wall, then you need to choose climbing varieties or some large shrub varieties whose branches have a certain trailing habit.
It should be noted that varieties used for flower walls all concentrate their blooming in spring; even repeat-flowering varieties can only bloom sparsely in other seasons and cannot achieve the flower-wall effect in all four seasons.
Climbing varieties recommended:
Parade, Pink Eden Rose, Lavender Flower Ring, Highgrove, Ilse Anst, Chagall, Grape Iceberg and so on.

"In Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian, what roses should be planted?"
In the Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian regions, as well as Hainan and southern Yunnan, because winter temperatures are relatively high, the dormancy conditions for roses (below 5°C for at least one month) cannot be met, so in these regions roses stay evergreen all year round, but this is both an advantage and a disadvantage.
The advantage is that when the roses in the homes of flower lovers in other regions are dormant in the cold winter, the roses in Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian are in full bloom, andbecause the climate is humid with little rain, the bloom quality of the roses is excellent; from the end of November each year to the end of March the following year, there is a best viewing period for flowers lasting as long as 4 months。
The disadvantage is that because they do not go dormant in winter, roses in Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian rarely have a neat mass-blooming effect in spring; each bloom usually has only a few or a dozen flowers, and cannot open dozens or even hundreds at the same time like spring in the north, which is deeply impressive.
Constance
And not going dormant in winter also causes once-flowering varieties to fail to bloom; for example, Pink Eden Rose is generally very difficult to rebloom in Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian, which is also the main reason many flower lovers' Eden roses at home do not bloom.
Therefore Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian are more suitable for growing repeat-flowering varieties, and it is best to choose floribunda varieties with good heat tolerance, a short sturdy plant habit and short flowering branches.
Recommended for Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian:
