Autumn has arrived, but don't assume plants will stop growing. On the contrary, there are many plants that must be sown in autumn, and they only bloom in the following spring or summer!

Before getting into green plants, Hua Shaoyi also assumed most plants were sown in spring. Only later did I learn that many beautiful garden plants are actually sown in autumn and bloom the following spring or summer.

In particular, biennial flowers and perennial herbaceous plants among herbaceous flowers are all suitable for autumn sowing. And for the high-appeal houseplants, remember to pull the weeds yourself after reading.

1

Pansy

Pansy is a common wildflower species in Europe and the national flower of Iceland and Poland. The flowers usually have three colors per bloom: purple, white, and yellow, hence the name pansy. Pansies are cold-hardy and prefer cool conditions, making them suitable for autumn sowing. There are many pansy varieties, from giant-flowered series with flower diameters reaching 10 cm to small, cute types, with various vivid flower colors as well as soft, elegant vintage color palettes. There is always one you will like!

2

Iceland poppy

Iceland poppy, also known as Arctic poppy, differs somewhat in appearance from the common poppy: the flowers are larger and the flower colors are more delicate. Sown in autumn, it blooms in summer.

3

Daisy

Daisies can be sown in autumn or early spring. When sown in autumn, they can bloom starting in December. The flowering period can last throughout spring, continuing until around May.

4

Baby's breath

The garden variety of baby's breath is relatively short, with an average plant height of about 20 cm. It can be sown in spring or autumn, and blooms about 16 weeks after sowing. For baby's breath seedlings, be sure to pinch the tips, as this encourages branching and produces a bursting ball of flowers.

5

Lobelia

Lobelia's scientific name is trailing lobelia. Sow in September-October, and the natural flowering period runs from summer to autumn. It takes 14-16 weeks from sowing to flowering. Lobelia has strong branching and a trailing habit, with rich flower colors and dense, lovely blooms.

6

Columbine

Columbine is also called columbine flower. It takes 5-6 months from sowing to flowering, and its natural flowering period is from late spring to midsummer. Both the flowers and leaves have very distinctive shapes.

7

Forget-me-not

The forget-me-not here is not the statice that is misnamed in flower markets, but the true "forget me not," which blooms small light blue flowers every April-May. In German legend, when God finished naming all the flowers, a little blue flower that had not been named cried out: "Oh, my God, please do not forget me!" So God gladly replied: "Do not forget me, that is your name!"

8

Verbena

Verbena has many varieties, divided into upright and trailing types, and the flower colors each have their own characteristics. It takes 12-14 weeks from sowing to flowering, and 15-18 weeks for trailing cultivation, with the flowering period from summer to autumn.

9

Dianthus

Dianthus, also known as Chinese dianthus, is a flower species native to our country, with a natural flowering period in summer. It is very low-maintenance, and there are many varieties and flower colors to choose from.

10

Scabiosa

Scabiosa is also known as wheel spur flower and pincushion flower. The flowering period is April to May. Cut-flower varieties generally have very long stems, while garden varieties are relatively short.

As for the suitable time for autumn sowing, every place in our country is different. Generally, as long as the daily low temperature is between 10 and 20 degrees and the high temperature is between 20 and 30 degrees, it is very suitable for sowing. (Reference: Northeast China / early to mid-August to September; North China / mid-to-late September to October; Jiangnan region / mid-to-late September to early November. South China / October to late November.)
