Autumn is a great season for succulents to shine. After their dismal look in summer, they need good care in autumn to bring out some color. Below is a rundown of tips for caring for succulents in autumn. You only need to slightly change your care routine during the process, and you can help your succulents quickly color up and shine, reaping a harvest full of surprises!

1. Don't rush to repot or change the soil

When autumn arrives, succulents will slowly wake up from dormancy. It is often said that autumn is the growing season for succulents, but at the beginning of autumn, don't rush to repot or change the soil. This is because at the start of autumn the weather is still very hot. We often speak of an "Indian summer," and that is because the early autumn sun is still scorching. Repotting and changing the soil at this time is bad for the growth of the succulents' fine roots. If things go wrong, it can even cause black rot, letting a succulent that made it safely through summer get handed its walking papers in autumn.

2. Remove dead leaves in time

Once summer has passed, succulents will certainly have some dead leaves left in the pot or on the plant. Never think that leaving dead leaves in the pot can provide nutrients to the succulent. On the contrary, dead leaves left covering the soil may make the soil less breathable. Moreover, if water is poured onto the dead leaves when watering, it will cause the dead leaves to rot, breed pathogens, and attack the succulent, so we need to remove and clean up the dead leaves in time. But if a leaf has only been used up and has not yet dried completely, and is still fairly firmly attached to the succulent, do not force it off. Wait until it is completely withered before removing it.

3. Increase watering gradually

Although you can start increasing the amount of water you give succulents in early autumn, you must not water too much at once. You need to increase the amount of water gradually. This is because some succulents have just woken up from dormancy and cannot yet adapt to being drenched with a large amount of water. Watering too much at once may cause the roots to rot from soaking.

4. Increase light gradually

In summer we usually shade our succulents. The succulents have adapted to an environment where they cannot often get sun, so suddenly increasing their light will instead scorch their leaves. Especially in the early autumn weather, there can still be high temperatures of over 30 degrees every day, with the blazing sun like fire, and some succulents with tender leaves are easily sunburned. It is better to increase light gradually, and wait until the weather is not so hot before giving them full sun.

5. Try growing them outdoors more

If conditions allow, try to let your succulents grow outdoors, as close as possible to a natural environment. The reason succulents can grow so beautifully in their native habitats is also because they are cared for by nature. Succulents grown outdoors simulate the natural environment, receiving the nourishment of sunshine and rain, and naturally they grow more beautifully.

6. Don't leave them in the rain for long periods

Succulents cannot be rained on, but an occasional rainfall will not kill them. It is just that after being rained on, you must promptly blot away the rainwater remaining in the leaf centers so that it does not rot the leaves. If you encounter several days of continuous rain, you need to be careful. In such conditions the air is humid, so you cannot water them, and letting them be rained on is even more out of the question.
