The summer heat hasn't completely faded yet, and the kalanchoe at home has gone black and rotty again, so sad. Why is kalanchoe so prone to black rot? Today Huahua will tell everyone how to effectively prevent and control black rot!

Why is kalanchoe prone to black rot?

Causes of black rot

At the turn of summer and autumn, the weather is muggy and the summer heat hasn't fully gone. During this period, kalanchoe has just come out of its dormant period, and the roots are relatively weak. Water it a bit too much and let the sun hit it, and the roots get smothered, and it quickly goes black and rotty.

Symptoms of black rot

Kalanchoe black rot starts turning black from the middle of the stem, then rapidly spreads to the roots and leaves, causing the roots and stems to rot, the branches to droop, and the leaves to become soft and wrinkled; in severe cases they fall off at a touch.

Some people mistake the black spots and water-soaked rot that appear on kalanchoe leaves for black rot, and believe that black rot is treatable, which is unscientific. This is usually not black rot, but

black spot disease

。

In fact, even without chemical treatment, as long as you stop watering and let its growing environment become dry, black spot disease can stop spreading.

What to do after kalanchoe goes black and rotty?

1. Isolate immediately

Black rot is highly contagious. Once discovered, immediately isolate the diseased plant and clean up the rotted stems and leaves.

2. Prune and disinfect

In the early stage of the disease, the root system is usually not damaged. At this point you only need to cut off the diseased stems and leaves, and apply carbendazim or chlorothalonil powder to the wounds to prevent further infection.

If the black rot is very severe and the roots have all rotted, you must change the pot and the soil. After taking the diseased plant out of the pot, cut off the intact upper part, soak it in a carbendazim solution, and after disinfecting, re-cuttings it. The original soil must be thrown away, and the original pot must be thoroughly disinfected.

3. Prevention is greater than treatment

The key to disease lies in prevention. In sensitive seasons, it is best to spray a fungicide on the leaves after every watering (spraying carbendazim or chlorothalonil is fine), and also spray after rain.

At the turn of summer and autumn, not only are mature kalanchoe plants prone to black rot, newly cuttings of kalanchoe are also prone to black rot. Below, Huahua will teach everyone how to avoid black rot in cuttings!

How to avoid black rot when cutting kalanchoe?

The reason for black rot in cuttings is very simple: too much water! So the key to preventing black rot lies in how to water correctly!

1. Change watering to misting

The root system of cuttings is relatively weak, and their water-absorbing ability is insufficient. Flooding the soil can easily lead to lack of oxygen and root rot. You can change watering to misting, using a sprayer to moisten only the top 2cm of the soil surface.

2. Control the amount of water

For a flower pot with a diameter of 10 cm, about 15 ml of water per misting is enough; for a flower pot with a diameter greater than 20 cm, 30 ml per misting, once every 5-7 days.

3. Better dry than wet

The watering principle for kalanchoe: better dry than wet. At most, a plant lacking water will produce one or two dead leaves and will never die, but once there is too much water, it's not just black rot, other diseases will also occur at the same time.

Precautions

1. The potting soil must be breathable

No matter what flower you grow, breathable potting soil is the most important thing. Muggy potting soil not only creates conditions for bacteria to multiply, but also reduces the resistance of the root system. For kalanchoe, use

、

cinder

or

peat

、

、

perlite

mixed together.

2. Soak the roots before repotting

After autumn begins, whether repotting or transplanting, first rinse the roots clean with water, then soak them in a carbendazim solution to reduce the chance of disease.
