We who love succulents love their colors most of all. They are alive; though they cannot speak, they quietly stand in wind and rain, through the years, changing into all kinds of colors. Color is the medal nature gives them, and color is what they want to say to us! Whenever I see one of my succulents change color, I gaze at it for a long time and silently say to myself: so that is how it is, it really is like that, just how many colors are there in the world after all!
The colors of succulents fall into our eyes, while the words that describe color are printed into our minds, never to be erased from our hearts. Beauty can not only be seen, it can also be written down, and then it deeply stimulates the cerebral cortex and unfolds endless imagination. Sometimes she is a rainbow, sometimes a piece of cheese, sometimes a gem, a flame, a piece of ice, a candy, or even a woman in a georgette qipao...
The one who loved color most was the famous writer Eileen Chang, who once mocked herself for loving it to the point of piling it on. She wrote of unrestrained red, pungent green; even blue had more than ten kinds! Many people do not like Chang, her writing is too sorrowful and desolate, too mixed and clashing. But rereading Chang at the age of forty, especially reading her descriptions of color, I finally understood that compared with the contrast of red and green, she preferred the harmony of greens, the irregular pairing of scallion green with peach pink. She writes of partings and reunions, sorrows and joys, yet with warmth; she writes of the myriad states of the human world, yet all returns to calm detachment.
So let me take just one ten-thousandth of Chang's color descriptions and pair them with my succulents. Irregular or contrasting, it should make a different kind of scenery! Striving to see a colorful world with black-and-white eyes, and to live a transparent life~
The flowers are blooming; the blossoms are pink with a little yellow in them, a bright shrimp red. -- The Golden Cangue
Fully open, it is a delicate yellow; though it has not been rained on, it seems to feel the breath of rain. -- Red Rose, White Rose
That blazing red, all the way down, sweeping away everything as it burns down the hillside. -- Aloeswood Incense: The First Brazier
(Those afraid of snakes should not read this passage, and certainly should not picture the scene for themselves, otherwise if the succulents at home are abandoned, it will be my fault.) Those thick dark green leaves poke their heads out in all directions. Like a nest of green snakes, and the touch of red on the branch tips is like a flicking snake tongue. -- Aloeswood Incense: The First Brazier
Silver-colored, with green ridges of light. Love in a Fallen City
The freshest and most pungent, damp green; whatever it touches, it dyes green. Red Rose, White Rose
Tied all the way up in a cross with green satin ribbon, revealing the deep pink petticoat underneath. -- Red Rose, White Rose
A jujube-red long vest... worn over a peacock-blue padded robe, extremely striking to the eye. -- Little Reunions
On the melancholy purple satin screen, a white bird among the woven golden clouds...... -- Jasmine Tea
Neatly and freshly wearing a blue cloth overall, with a red silk qipao faintly showing beneath it, innocent and honest with a touch of seductiveness. -- On Clothing
Warm and slow, just like the sunlight dried on the pink fleece lining inside old cotton shoes. -- On Clothing
An unnamed little Western potted plant (I am afraid it is not a succulent, hehe), small pink-red flowers, speckled leaves with serrated edges in dark red mixed with moss green, vermilion and kingfisher green scattered profusely...... -- On Food and Painting Cakes to Fill Hunger
Her face was yellow and oily, like a gilded Guanyin Bodhisattva. -- Love in a Fallen City
So red it could not be redder, red beyond control, clusters and clusters of small flowers,... the wall peeling and burning, burning all the way along; even the purple-blue sky was smoked red. -- Love in a Fallen City
Goldfish yellow
Red and green stripes
Sapphire blue, blue as ice
Brocade lined robe
Red and yellow pleated skirt
Yellow and green stripes
Cream white, cream yellow, cream red
Apple green
Scallion green paired with peach pink
Lake color or snow blue
Glossy black-purple mixed with dark green
Oily purple
Azure
Red-purple
Honey color
Pink-purple portrait of a figure in ancient dress
Little eggshell celadon
Dark blue-purple georgette qipao
Blue eyes, misty white
If I were to use one color to describe Eileen Chang, I think it would be xuanser! Black with a faint red showing through, silent yet unrestrained, transparent like an old well yet bottomless, always revealing a spirit of vigor.
If I were to give one word to those of us who grow succulents, then, colorful! Life is a gorgeous road, with succulents blooming all along the roadside; and so we walk on, the corners of our mouths slightly upturned, the corners of our eyes slightly downturned, beautifully all the way!
You are among the flowers,
Like flowers in the wind.
That year,
The flowers bloomed very late,
Fortunately,
There is you!
