Snake plant leaves are thick and fleshy, evergreen all year round, and can purify indoor air. It is also called tiger tail sansevieria or thousand-year sansevieria, and there are short-leaf snake plants, long-leaf snake plants, golden-edged snake plants, and so on. In fact, the care method is the same. Garden friends often ask Xiaoya why the potted snake plant they keep at home grows especially slowly, as if it is not growing at all, and why it also produces few side shoots. How can it be made to grow quickly and fill the pot?

To grow snake plants, use this one method: more side shoots sprout, and the pot fills up within a year

Everyone knows that snake plants can be propagated by cuttings and survive; as long as the snake plant leaves are fresh, they can all be used for cuttings. Autumn is very suitable for cuttings. Just cut the leaves directly into small sections about 7 cm long, let the wounds dry, and then insert them into sandy soil.

Keep them moist and shaded. Planting cuttings densely in one pot means more small shoots will emerge. When all the seedlings have grown out, we can grow a whole pot of snake plants, achieving a full-pot state.

So if you are not growing them by cuttings, the snake plants kept at home can also be made to grow faster through some planting techniques, and they can fill the pot in about a year.

Snake plants are perennials. After growing them for one or two years, they need to be repotted, because the nutrients in the soil have all been absorbed. So replace or add new fertile, loose soil. Only with nutrients can they grow faster.

Plenty of sunlight can also make them grow robustly. If they are kept indoors for a long time in a place with insufficient light, it will affect their growth, and the small side shoots will also be hard to grow out. If you want a full pot, then give them more sun. Apart from shading them in summer, they can be in the sun at other times.

Timely fertilizing is key, especially in this season now. Autumn is the peak growing season for snake plants, so they need fertilizer. If you do not have fertilizer at home, we can put a handful of cooked soybeans into the soil in the flower pot, at the edge of the pot, cover them well with soil, and then water thoroughly. Gradually, the soybeans will turn into fertilizer and be absorbed by the snake plant. If there are other nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers, you can also give some. Only with fertility can they grow faster and sturdier.

If the potting soil has become compacted and looks whitish, with very little humus inside and no nutrients, and the snake plant shows no sign of growth for several months, then it needs to be loosened and repotted in time, using peat soil or leaf mold, with part of garden soil and sand added in.

If the soil in the flower pot is too dry or too wet for a long time, it will affect growth. Be sure to place it in a well-ventilated place with plenty of light, and even occasionally take it outside to a terrace or outdoors for a period of time. It will grow faster and more lush and attractive, and it will be easy to grow a full pot.
