Why are the leaves of the peony plant curling? The problem must lie here

22. Peony leaves curling? The problem must be here!
This is an excerpt from the original "Peony Cultivation" column article by Lan Yao
Among flower lovers who grow peonies, someone has surely encountered this situation: in spring, the leaves of the peony plant do not spread out, and the very small leaves are all wrinkled and shriveled together. What is going on?
So today Lan Yao will talk about several possibilities for the wrinkling and curling of peony leaves.
1. Newly transplanted roots have not developed well
Most peonies with wrinkled leaves were newly transplanted in the previous autumn or winter, caused by the root system not having grown well yet.
Some flower lovers transplant too late, missing the growth period of the peony root system, so the peony roots do not get repaired well. When they sprout in spring, growing flower buds consumes a large amount of nutrients, but because the roots have not grown well they cannot absorb nutrients from the potting soil, resulting in insufficient nutrition and wrinkled leaves.
Potted peonies are especially prone to wrinkled leaves, mostly because the flower pots chosen for potting are relatively small and the roots are pruned too much, while the branches are not pruned correspondingly. When they sprout in spring, the overly damaged roots have not been well repaired, and so the leaves appear wrinkled.
2. Roots damaged by freezing in winter
Newly transplanted peonies still need attention to keeping warm when it is cold in winter. Peonies that have been transplanted recently have relatively weak cold resistance. If they are frozen in winter and the roots are damaged, wrinkled leaves will also appear in spring.
3. Root damage
There is also the fact that some flower lovers do not know how to manage peonies in winter and continue to water the peonies in winter, causing the peony roots to be damaged by waterlogging. After sprouting in spring, wrinkled and distorted leaves will also appear.
It can be seen that when peony leaves are wrinkled and distorted, generally speaking it is still the roots that have a problem. As for how the peony roots developed the problem, you need to compare it with your care process to find the cause.
How to prevent peony leaves from curling?
In order to avoid the phenomenon of peony leaves curling and wrinkling, Lan Yao suggests that you transplant at the right time. In most areas, transplanting around the Mid-Autumn Festival is fine.
When potting, the flower pot should be chosen large and deep, and the roots should be pruned as little as possible. If the pot is small and too many roots are pruned, it will definitely be unfavorable for growth the following year.
Furthermore, in winter, try to keep the potting soil on the dry side, and do not water unless it is very dry. Keeping the potting soil dry, on the one hand, will not cause waterlogging and root rot in the peony, and on the other hand, it can also increase the peony's cold resistance.
Besides peony leaves curling, many flower lovers have also encountered the problem of potted peonies not blooming the second year. Tomorrow Lan Yao will make a specific analysis, and you are welcome to keep following.
