0003. Late summer pruning and care for roses: remember these few points and they will bloom explosively again in a month!

Although roses can bloom in all four seasons, they grow most vigorously and bloom most abundantly and to standard in spring and autumn. Roses blooming in summer are often hard to accept; compared with the promotional photos, they can be said to be ugly beyond belief.

So after roses have endured the intense heat of a summer, how should we get them to bloom to a relatively standard quality in autumn?

If you want your roses to perform well in autumn, then right now you need to pay attention to "fixing up" your roses.

Late summer pruning methods for roses

Roses are masochists; they need constant pruning to grow well. In summer, because of the hot weather, roses often enter a semi-dormant state, growing little or growing poorly.

So by late summer and early autumn, we need to prune them to promote the production of new branches and thereby flowering.

Healthy roses

For healthy rose plants, pruning in late summer and early autumn should aim for tidiness, and heavy pruning is not advisable; generally, the pruning amount is 1/2-1/3 of the whole plant.

Cutting branches back by 1/2-1/3 can keep the rose in a relatively low plant shape, and most of what remains will be sturdy branches. The thickness of rose branches is directly related to the size of the flowers; if the branches are too thin, there will be insufficient nutrients and no flowering. So keeping appropriate flowering branches is crucial.

After pruning, we also need to apply additional fertilizer promptly, because in autumn the roses once again enter a rapid growth period and need to consume a large amount of nutrients, so after pruning, fertilizer should be applied promptly.

It is best to apply a slow-release fertilizer; of course, after applying slow-release fertilizer, you still need to regularly apply quick-acting water-soluble fertilizer.

Pruning bare-stemmed roses

Roses are most prone to black spot disease in summer, which then causes the leaves to drop completely. If your roses were not managed well in summer and most of the leaves have already dropped, then the pruning method above does not apply.

For roses that have lost most of their leaves, only light pruning can be done; just trim a tiny bit off the top to promote new branch growth.

Since the leaves have all dropped, we cannot ask the roses to perform so well in autumn, because you did not take good care of them, so do not set too high a demand. Being alive is already very good; being able to bloom is an unexpected delight, so keep a calm mindset.

Of course, if you insist on pruning a rose that has lost all its leaves according to the method for healthy roses, it is not impossible; it is just that Lanyao thinks that would require you to have a relatively high level of management skill, otherwise it is very easy to die, especially for potted roses; if water management is poor, it can die on you in minutes.

The method Lanyao talks about is a management approach more suitable for beginners, with staying alive as the first principle. Only if your roses stay alive will there be more possibilities; if the beauty of autumn is gone, there is still the profusion of flowers in spring!
