I had always heard that California is a paradise for succulents, and I had seen quite a few succulent lovers post photos of succulents growing by the roadside in California, but I had never seen them with my own eyes. Recently I was lucky enough to take a trip to California, and my eyes lit up the whole way there - obvious symptoms of succu-love...

Clumps of clustered Echella-like succulents everywhere, which should be Echeveria elegans. At that moment I had only one thought, and that was to take them home... in the end I held back, because after all, when you are out and about you have to mind your manners. There were also big clustered Aeonium arboreum, and I was already drunk on this whole patch of Aeonium - you know that feeling of not being able to move your feet! The most beautiful of all were the Crassulaceae succulents, layer upon layer, covering the entire ground. Wind and rain beat down on them and they still looked so ethereal - why doesn't their farina rub off? Normally I have no feelings at all for cactus globes, but now I finally understand their beauty; a really big cactus globe still has plenty of charm! There was also a Dudleya worth several hundred per head, growing wild just like that, bathed in California's abundant sunshine. Along the way I had already become addicted to the beauty of wild succulents, and I realized that it is not that succulents are too delicate, but that we pamper them too much.
