What to do when succulents attract pests? Wait another 3 days and the plant may wither and die
Kill mealybugs like this and they drop dead instantly!
A few days ago, Huahua saw a flower friend who had placed a few freshly potted succulents on the balcony and found 3 fat, big mealybugs. Want to guess what happened? It turns out the mealybugs fell down from upstairs!
1. Squash them with your bare hands or tweezers
If there aren't particularly many mealybugs in your home, you can use a toothpick, tweezers, or a pointed needle and simply stab them dead. Although mealybugs look rather hard, in fact one poke kills them.
2. Wash them off with running water
If some flower friends find it gross and don't want to touch them, then put the whole succulent under running water, just turn on the tap, and carefully rinse both the front and back sides, using the running water to wash the mealybugs away. You can also directly use a pressure spray bottle with a long wand; the effect is quite good either way.
3. Kill them with alcohol, soapy water, etc.
Flower friends who have alcohol at home can choose 75% alcohol, directly dip a cotton swab in the alcohol, and gently wipe the spots on the succulent leaves where the mealybugs are. After repeating several times, the mealybugs will be killed!
4. Kill them with mosquito coils
If you find mealybugs on your succulent, you can put the succulent in a somewhat larger sealed container, then place a lit mosquito coil inside, seal it up together, and wait until the mosquito coil has burned out and then let it sit a while longer. Take the succulent out, and the mealybugs will basically be killed!
5. Spray with pesticide
The last method Huahua introduces is to directly spray with pesticide. Common products like Jiebi Zhi or Jiechong Ling can be mixed to the proper concentration and sprayed about once a week, and the mealybugs will soon be killed! Of course, you can also try this pesticide from Huahua's shop; the effect is excellent too!
Drive snails away like this and they'll never dare come back!
Some flower friends think snails are quite cute, but if they gnaw on succulent leaves, you won't find them cute anymore. So if you come across snails, hurry up and drive them away!
1. Sprinkle some eggshells in the pot
Don't throw away the leftover eggshells at home. Just rinse the eggshells clean with water, leave them in the sun to dry, or heat them in the microwave for a few minutes so the eggshells dehydrate quickly, then break them into small pieces.
Sprinkle the crushed eggshell pieces on the surface of the succulent pot, or just scatter some around the edge of the pot. The edges of crushed eggshells have sharp corners. When a snail passes over the eggshells, the sharp corners will cut the snail's belly, and it will never be able to crawl into the flower pot again!
2. Sprinkle some salt around the pot edge
If you can't get eggshells for the moment, you can also just grab a handful of salt from the kitchen and sprinkle a ring of it along the outside of the succulent pot. Salt can dehydrate proteins. If a snail crawls over the salt, it may cause harm to its body, and this way you can prevent snails from gnawing on the succulent leaves!
Kill fungus gnats like this and they'll all die off!
If we're talking about the most annoying thing all year round, it must be fungus gnats! Fungus gnats get into everything, and no matter how you try to kill them, they just won't die. It's enough to drive you crazy!
1. Yellow sticky traps
Fungus gnats especially love yellow, so if you want to kill them, you can go buy a yellow sticky trap and just place it next to the succulent pot. Basically after 1-2 hours, you'll see loads of fungus gnats stuck to the sticky trap!
2. Laundry detergent water
Mix laundry detergent with water. Basically, one standard 550ml mineral water bottle with a small pinch of laundry detergent added is enough. Shake it evenly, put it in a spray bottle, and spray directly toward the places where there are fungus gnats. As long as the laundry detergent water touches the wings of the fungus gnats, they basically won't be able to fly anymore! And with a lower concentration of laundry detergent water, there's no harm to the succulents.
3. Spread sand on the pot surface
The reason fungus gnats largely can't be wiped out is because of eggs in the soil. So at this point, you can spread a layer of fine sand on the surface of the pot, and then fungus gnats won't be able to get into the soil to lay eggs!
Kill ants like this and they'll never be seen again!
Lately, many flower friends have told Huahua that ants have appeared in their homes. Killing one doesn't work; you have to kill the entire nest. What to do? Why not try soaking tobacco shreds in water!
Collect the cigarette butts left over from smoking at home; about 5-7 is enough. Soak them in clean water for more than 1 day, then the next day fish out the cigarette butts, and what's left is the tobacco shred water. Pour the tobacco shred water directly into the flower pot, and the ants will basically be killed!
