If you are also one of the office workers, leaving home at seven or eight in the morning and getting back at seven in the evening (or even later), then apart from sleeping, taking a walk after dinner and other leisure time, you have only 4 hours each workday to truly touch everything in your home. Nor do you always stay in at the weekend; especially if you love to go out and roam, you might not catch even once a week the glow of the setting sun falling across your room.

So, are you really close enough to your own home? Luckily, we always have a chance to make up for this lack, for example by designing the look of home with our own hands. So how should you do it? Cleo Scheulderman may give you one kind of answer:Through the display of plants, create shifting seasons for your home.Believe it or not, home aesthetics with plants as the leading role is already a global trend!

Together with her

use plants to create shifting seasons at home

Cleo Scheulderman is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. As a stylist, she is skilled at gently interpreting the ambiguous flow between seasons and plants. Recently, in a collaboration with a Dutch home and fashion magazine, she brought this specialty to the extreme.

In this home space design, she brought subtropical-climate-style potted plants into the home environment, giving the space accompanied by plants a stylish and simple quality, while at the same time filling it with the breath of spring:A wide variety of plants are placed at staggered heights, and leaves of different shapes, sizes and colors interlace with one another, as if composing a beautiful concerto of plants。

Cleo's pattern for pairing green spaces can be traced, just look: in terms of plant types, the versatile plants that get along harmoniously with all kinds of furniture are those full-bodied ones with round leaves, such as the olive tree, or slender ones with narrow, long leaves, such as bamboo plants.

In terms of spatial color, green hanging foliage and potted plants on tables and cabinets can add brightness and a sense of theme to a home space dominated by gray and white tones.

In terms of the overall space, besides real potted plants, prints and hanging pictures featuring various leaves and insects can also add interest to monotonous walls. Who can say this is not a natural element?

Like Cleo, in the hot summer you can even choose a distinctive set of wooden and rattan furniture. The slender, repeating lines of rattan not only add a refreshing coolness to the senses, but also enhance the stylish design feel of the home。

They bring green nature indoors

and play with grand landscapes in small spaces

Not only Cleo, German designers Igor and Judith are also strong advocates of plant space aesthetics.

Originally one lived in Munich and the other in the suburbs of Paris. Their love of nature and plants prompted them to jointly set up a blog called Urban Jungle Bloggers (Urban Jungle),mainly advocating a green, natural life, creating and sharing a lifestyle centered on plants, succulents and potted plants。

Every month, the blog launches a themed activity, such as "Share your green windowsill," "Succulents on the desk," "Succulents and coffee time," "Succulents in glass vessels" and so on,and they select outstanding representatives of home plant pairing from the many participants and upload them to the website。

They believe that by bringing green nature indoors, even a small space can play with grand landscapes: for example, hang a green plant in a sunny bedroom and pair it with a naturalistic pendant lamp to create an atmosphere of sleeping in nature.

A windowsill should not be left blank or piled with clutter, let small green plants sit in rows, with a few small decorations placed in between, and your home can show a distinctive elegance.

They like to dot large expanses of green with small details that highlight the bright spots, making the green space more lively.

In their view, looking at the whole home space, the choice of flower pots is very important, and best reflects the owner's ingenuity. Simplicity and ornateness each have their own merits; in the end, the principle is still to set off the most beautiful side of the plant.

Compared with rigid formulas, they prefer this: as long as you choose the right kinds of green plants, you can create a home full of greenery.

Our home

can also have a green theme

A branch of apricot blossom lets you smell the brilliant fragrance of spring; elegant hydrangea lets you feel the heat of summer; fresh-blooming autumn cherry gives you the unique comfort of autumn; and wintersweet blooming in the wind lets you understand a different kind of winter tenderness. If you want, such four seasons can be had without leaving home.

Besides the plant pairing inspiration that Cleo Scheulderman and the Urban Jungle Bloggers bring you, you should also know:

About pairing plants with space

For a small living room or study, you can choose small pines and cypresses, asparagus fern, small succulents or their combined bonsai, etc.

The feathery leaves of ferns give a feeling of intimacy, suitable for placement in the dining room; the tender leaves of purple velvet plant have a texture that makes people feel gentle, and it needs side backlighting to show its texture,so it is suitable for a dining room or home bar with side lighting。

Crown of thorns, with its hard, spiny stems, is suitable for a balcony with good light; bamboo is suitable for placement in an east- or west-facing living room within 3 m of the window; orchids are suitable for placement in the living room within 2 m of the window.

For the kitchen, you can consider aloe, billbergia, sword fern, lucky bamboo and others with better stain resistance. Place larger plants in corners or stopping points, especially large potted foliage plants.

About placement positions

The best configuration point-- the point where spatial vision is most easily concentrated;

The best visual height-- a horizontal line of sight about 1.6-2 m above the ground, suitable for viewing from any angle.

The positions and order of arrangement-- plants at close viewing distance should have fine leaves, small stature and bright colors; plants at far viewing distance should be large and dark green. Small plants can be placed directly on wall-mounted hangers or pot stands to show a stronger sense of depth.

Pay attention to layering-- the method of small in front and large behind, short in front and tall behind can create spatial depth.

The building of a home is a process of gradual accumulation, always changing. In different seasons, according to your mood or the theme of a gathering, turn the room into different looks. Each time, it is like creating a small universe. And this is the meaning of the so-called "home": here is everything you love, unrelated to home ownership or size, but rather to how much heart you pour into it.
