When we speak of autumn and of falling leaves

there is always a rich sense of melancholy

Yet after a leaf falls, can it only keep company with rotting mud?

Not at all.

Falling leaves are Ouyang Xiu's

"Deep in the night the wind through the bamboo knocks autumn's rhythm, ten thousand leaves, a thousand sounds, all are grief";

they are Gong Zizhen's

"The fallen blossom is not a heartless thing, turned into spring mud it nurtures the flowers the more";

they are Du Fu's

"The boundless falling leaves rustle down, the endless Yangtze rolls on and on."

Under the carving of the artist Omid Asadi,

even a tiny fallen leaf has a brilliance all its own,

each with its own story, sad or joyful.

In his eyes, what drifts down was never a fallen leaf,

but one work of art after another.

One day, while Omid and his wife were out walking and talking about paper-cutting,

a leaf suddenly fell on his head,

and Omid at once hit on the idea of combining

leaves with paper-cutting.

With the craft knife and needle in his hands he draws on the leaves,

using art to give these leaves rebirth,

completing the cycle and the elevation of life.

The literary giant Dickens

Jack Nicholson in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"

He believes that an apple falling from a tree

after thousands of years finally led to a "Newton" discovery,

and falling leaves are to him what the apple was to Newton.

The dancing dandelion,

is there to welcome new life.

Two trees keeping watch,

the love of two people.

The posture of the goshawk,
is to look proudly down on the waves and the boundless firmament.

Bright eyes and lovely glances,

radiant with charm.

The phoenix's nirvana,

rebirth through fire.

Feathers are the power of flight,

a pen is the sharp sword of thought.

Che Guevara, though only a face,

stands for the power of an era.

John Lennon, a brilliantly talented musician,

was without doubt the brightest, most dazzling star of his time.

Time will age your hands,

but it will not age the tenderness of your fingertips.

The Persian cheetah, even lying still,

still has an imposing presence.

A smile that cannot be captured,

yet is pondered and studied by the crowd.

The life of a butterfly, though brief,

loses none of its elegance, calm and composure.

Slender leaves, sparse joints;

snow cannot press it down, wind cannot break it.

The steed is lifelike, its long mane flying,

its magnificent posture as though it had crossed oceans through countless hardships.

What made Omid spend several years

devoting himself wholeheartedly to one thing,

is "leaf carving."

After several years,

Omid's skill grew more and more refined,

and with his own deft hands

he shaped the beautiful forms of leaves.

It is precisely this "craftsmanship" that let him complete

a series of astonishing masterpieces.

Portraits

Omid Asadi says:

To me, art is looking at this world and the things around me from another angle. I began to wonder, why does no one pay attention to these beautiful leaves? If they were called flowers, we would not overlook them like this. I want to give leaves another life, to make them into art.

Scenery

Omid has one principle: he only creates from fallen leaves,

and will never touch a single leaf that is still alive.

This approach is very eco-friendly and very humane,

but it makes creation much more difficult,

since fallen leaves that have lost their moisture are very brittle and often crack while being carved,

but after years of hard practice,

Omid's knife work has become superb.

Daring to Climb

One grain of sand, one world,

one flower, one heaven,

one leaf, one paradise,

Omid

with a needle tip and a carving knife

giving life to these fallen things,

they, who should have rotted away with the dust,

became astonishingly exquisite works.

Sometimes,

falling is not passing away.

It is a new beginning.
