Why is the chrysanthemum hailed as the leader of autumn's flowers? A gardening salon explains

If one flower could represent a season, then the chrysanthemum must surely represent autumn. Like peach blossoms in spring, lotus in summer, and plum blossoms in winter, the chrysanthemum is the main theme of this season.

Wuhan All-People Voluntary Tree Planting Network, together with Nanhu Shanzhuang Community
carried out an activity with"Chrysanthemum Fragrance and Elegant Charm, Colorful Life"as its theme
chrysanthemum science popularization and cultivation activity
This activity invited2018 Garden Family candidate - Wang Jiyouto popularize chrysanthemum knowledge for everyone.
Wang Jiyou
2018 Garden Family candidate
has loved growing flowers and plants since he was young, and it has been more than 30 years so far.
Among the many flowers, what Wang Jiyou loves most is the chrysanthemum.
He once traveled back and forth for several hours by bus in high temperatures of over 30 degrees just to get chrysanthemum seedlings from a flower friend. He left at noon and did not get home until after 5 p.m. This spirit of loving greenery can truly be described as "crazy about flowers, devoted to them as if to life"!
At the start of the activity, Teacher Wang Jiyou first introduced the history of chrysanthemum development in China:
The chrysanthemum originated in our country and has a cultivation history of more than 3,000 years in China. As early as the ancient book "Book of Rites," there is a record that "in the month of late autumn, the chrysanthemum has yellow flowers."
By the Han Dynasty, chrysanthemums were already cultivated as medicinal plants. During the Jin and Wei periods, large-scale cultivation began, and later they gradually developed into ornamental flowers.
The Song Dynasty was the peak period of chrysanthemum development. "Chrysanthemum Manual," written by Liu Mengquan of the Song Dynasty, included 163 chrysanthemum varieties, making it China's earliest monograph on chrysanthemums.
"Qunfangpu," written by Wang Xiangjin of the Ming Dynasty, included more than 270 chrysanthemum varieties.
By the Qing Dynasty, there were even more chrysanthemum manuals and specialized works on chrysanthemum cultivation. New varieties continued to increase, and cultivation techniques gradually improved. During this period, exchanges of chrysanthemum varieties also became relatively frequent.
After listening to the history of chrysanthemum development, everyone became more and more interested in chrysanthemums. Teacher Wang Jiyou then passed around a book he had brought, "Chrysanthemum Appreciation and Cultivation," for everyone to look at, so they could learn about the general varieties of chrysanthemums. Everyone enthusiastically held the book and curiously read about the chrysanthemums in it. When they saw varieties they did not recognize, they took the initiative to ask the teacher.

After admiring the chrysanthemum varieties, everyone was captivated by their beauty and became highly excited for a time.
Chrysanthemum lovers such as Zhang Yanping, Tian Jinping, and Jiang Li also recited chrysanthemum poems on site to express their love for chrysanthemums.
"On the Chrysanthemum"
"In the rustling west wind they are planted all over the courtyard; their pistils are cold and their fragrance is chill, so butterflies find it hard to come. If in some year I were the Azure Emperor, I would bid them bloom together with the peach blossoms."
In order to help everyone better understand chrysanthemums
a pot of chrysanthemum seedlings was also given to each person on site

At the end of the activity
based on his many years of experience growing chrysanthemums, Teacher Wang Jiyou
shared with everyone
the cutting methods and care techniques for chrysanthemums

Cutting and Care of Chrysanthemums
From cutting to flowering, chrysanthemums have a growth period of about 120 days. The first two months are vegetative growth, and the latter two months are reproductive growth. At this time, the temperature is high and the air is dry, so the survival rate of cuttings is affected to some extent. You should choose semi-lignified terminal shoots that grow vigorously, have thick stems, and are free of pests and diseases as cuttings, and keep few leaves.
Remove the lower leaves of the cuttings and keep only 2 to 4 leaves at the top to reduce water consumption. After insertion, place them in a cool place for care or shade them under a shade awning to prevent direct sunlight. Spray water on the leaves once or twice a day to keep the leaves moist. When spraying, do not let water flow into the potting soil. This not only meets the chrysanthemum's water needs but also prevents waterlogging, which can cause root rot.
