Nowadays, growing orchids has become a trend. In the orchid market, the dazzling array of orchids makes you fall in love with them. If you are not an expert, you really can't see what the tricks are. Because in the eyes of experts, the orchids they like must be comprehensively evaluated from many aspects, not chosen at will just because they look comfortable, which is what we beginners do!

Liking orchids does not mean understanding orchids. For orchids that are more suitable for the general trend, they are also bonsai pursued by many people. But to say you understand orchids, you still have to consult a master properly. For those of us who like growing orchids, as long as our orchids grow well and have luxuriant branches and leaves, it can be said to be a success. Other experience still needs to be learned well.

This is exactly what people who do not understand orchids do. Zhang Minghua is one of them, and also my good buddy. In October of the year before last, during National Day, he saw that the two pots of Cymbidium goeringii he was caring for had already outgrown their pots. In order not to let the orchids continue to grow in a narrow space, he decided to buy pots to divide the orchids so that the Cymbidium goeringii would have more space to grow healthily. So he called a few of us to help him, do odd jobs, and prepare some fresh mountain soil, humus soil, red brick granules, etc., ready to repot.

When repotting the Cymbidium goeringii, the moment we turned the pot soil over, it was really a surprise. The roots of the Cymbidium goeringii had already filled the flowerpot, and many old pseudobulbs had also appeared. Before we could figure it out, Brother Hua took scissors and started trimming the roots with a snip-snip, casually cutting off the old pseudobulbs with dead leaves as well, about seven or eight of them.

Then we divided the plants and potted them. In order not to confuse the scene, Brother Hua told me to throw away the useless old pseudobulbs. It just so happened that Uncle Qiu, who was passing by, saw it and quickly told me not to throw them away, saying he would take them and give them a try. Without saying anything else, I gave them all to him. Uncle Qiu was also very polite and courteous. He quickly said thank you 3 times and then hurried away.

Later I learned that Uncle Qiu was an expert at growing orchids and had a thorough grasp of orchid varieties and growth habits. The old pseudobulbs that we were going to throw away could also grow good seedlings under his training and management. If we had not seen it with our own eyes, we would still have been half doubtful! That was in March of this year. When we were having fun at his home, he casually brought up this matter and also brought out the old pseudobulb orchid plants we had thrown away that year to show us. They were indeed extraordinary, with luxuriant branches and leaves, even better than Brother Hua's orchids. For this reason, we had to learn from him.
