How to choose pots for succulents in summer? Avoid two types with poor breathability that easily smother succulents

The pot is very important, and today the editor will focus on how to choose and use pots. Summer has arrived, and a good pot is very important for the growth of succulents. Currently popular pots on the market include purple clay pots, red clay pots, ceramic pots (such as various soup bowls and teacups, and flowing-glaze pots), coarse pottery pots, and plastic pots (such as Wanxiang pots, small black square pots, root-control pots, and bottom-tray water-retaining pots).

1. With so many kinds of pots, you cannot just use whichever one you want. Take a look at the taboos for choosing pots.

Red clay pots: if you water too much, they easily become stuffy, and moisture is lost very quickly. If you have a very good grasp of how much water to give, you can also choose red clay pots. Thumb pots are not suitable for succulents; their only advantage is that they look relatively good in photos. This is because small red clay pots and thumb pots cannot hold much soil and are also prone to soil and water loss. However, if you have spare time to carefully care for succulents at home every day, any small pottery pot or thumb pot will do. But they are not very suitable for lazy people.

White pottery pots without holes: having no holes simply makes them a succulent killer, since they are neither breathable nor water-permeable. There are also ceramic pots without holes: in these pots all the water stays at the bottom, and in summer the bottom becomes a sauna! Unless you are an expert waterer, this type is not recommended. Guanyin vase pots: this kind of pot has a large belly and a small neck, and is especially unsuitable for heat dissipation in summer. Especially in summer, the inside is very wet and stuffy, and it simply cannot breathe.

2. Watering amounts for various flower pots

Plastic pots: many people use 7*7 small black square pots. Small black square pots dry out very easily, so you must pay attention to watering. It is recommended to switch to 10*10 ones, which have better breathability.

Ceramic pots: ceramic pots retain water very well and are suitable for summer. Just pour a circle of water along the pot wall, no more and no less.

Purple clay pots: purple clay pots have moderate water retention. How much to water depends on the size of the purple clay pot, so judge it yourself.

Unglazed fired pots: their breathability and water retention are similar to those of purple clay pots.

Red clay pots: red clay pots must be watered frequently, and watering at night is best. For those who do not dare to water much, just rinse the surface of the pot with tap water and that counts as water.

2. What kind of pot is better?

Relatively speaking, in summer it is best to use purple clay pots or pottery pots, because purple clay has good water retention and strong breathability. Generally, choose a height of 7-8 cm. The diameter is best if it is a bit larger. If your succulent has deeper roots, you can also choose a larger one.

Do not waste discarded pots either. You can use them to plant some Sedum acre and Sedum hispanicum; by autumn they will quickly fill out and look very cute.

4. Be sure to check your flower pots multiple times

In summer, dead leaves must be removed, because with water in summer and no airflow, they easily rot. Of course, pest control is also necessary. Pay attention to whether your succulents have insects, and remember to apply pesticide in time.

If there is soil loss, replenish it at the right time. The surface of the flower pot is not suitable for decorations with too large an area, as that is flashy but impractical. It is recommended to remove these large and non-breathable decorations such as stones. Always keep it breathable. If some have not rooted after several months, it is recommended to quickly change the pot and soil and try again.

If your succulent unfortunately dies, do not throw it away, there is still hope! Some succulents, such as those in the genus Aeonium, may look as if all their leaves have fallen off, but in autumn they are very likely to grow new buds again. Give the succulent some time, and also give it a little water. If by October your succulent still shows no movement, then you can only throw it away and buy a new succulent!

The above are the little tricks for choosing and using pots. Have you learned them?
