Being bitten by pets such as cats and dogs happens from time to time, but being bitten by a giant salamander is truly rare. Recently, a 3-year-old boy in the Xuzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone was teasing the family's pet giant salamander while an adult was changing the water for the fish, and ended up with his thumb bitten, and was sent to the hospital for treatment.

On the evening of March 6, Xuzhou Renci Hospital admitted a boy who had been bitten by a pet giant salamander, which is truly rare. Asking the parent, Mr. Liu, revealed that a few days earlier a friend had given him a giant salamander, and Mr. Liu had bought a fish tank to keep it. On the evening of March 6, while Mr. Liu was changing the water for the giant salamander, his 3-year-old son was playing nearby.

While Mr. Liu stood up to pour the water away, the child, thinking the giant salamander was fun, reached out to tease it, and the giant salamander bit directly onto his left thumb, and he immediately burst into loud crying. Mr. Liu hurried over and found that the child's finger had been bitten until it was a bloody mess. Flustered, he wrapped the child's finger in a towel, carried him downstairs and headed to the hospital.

After the doctors at Renci Hospital took the case, they found multiple wounds on the child's left thumb, with the wounds reaching down to the bone, and injury to the thumb extensor tendon, blood vessels and nerves, requiring surgery to repair the wounds. After more than an hour of surgery, the child's thumb was successfully reattached. Because it was a bite from a fish, whether infection will occur still needs to be closely monitored, and it is currently still in the observation period.

A reporter consulted experts in aquaculture and learned that the giant salamander, whose scientific name is Andrias davidianus, is a carnivorous amphibian. Although it is rather ferocious by nature, cases of it harming people are rarely heard of. "The child was bitten, most likely because teasing angered the giant salamander or frightened it."

It is understood that the hospital admits several cases each month of children bitten by pet animals, most of which involve inadequate supervision by parents, with the child mischievously teasing the pet and being bitten in return. Parents are hereby reminded to be careful and pay attention to safety when feeding and playing with pet animals. If an accident occurs, take the child to the hospital promptly.
