What flowers can forecast the weather? These plants are worth having

Since ancient times, people have known well that croaking frogs and low-flying swallows are signs of coming rain, and many animals have the ability to forecast the weather.

And in the plant kingdom, there are naturally also very wonderful flowers and plants, and local people use their characteristics to predict changes in the weather. Let's get to know these magical plant "weather forecasters" together!

1. Zephyr lily

In the tropical rainforest of Xishuangbanna, the weather changes as quickly as a child's mood. Here grows a flower called the zephyr lily (Zephyranthes), and it happens to like bursting into mass bloom right before thunder, lightning, wind and rain arrive. So everyone calls it the "wind-and-rain flower," using it to predict changes in the weather.

The zephyr lily isa herbaceous plant of the genus Zephyranthes in the Amaryllidaceae family, shaped like a narcissus, and when in full bloom it opens in a brilliant red expanse.

Before a rainstorm arrives, the weather is usually very muggy, the plant's transpiration increases, and the flowering hormones in its bulbs rapidly multiply, stimulating flower bud growth, so that the flowers bloom in a splendid mass that leaves people enchanted.

At the same time, its resilient nature also gives it the flower meaning of "bravely facing one's own setbacks." Life is never smooth sailing; when you meet difficulties, why not think of this wind-and-rain flower blooming proudly in the face of wind and rain!

2. Oriental oak

In Longding Village, Xincheng County, Guangxi, China, there is an oriental oak (Quercus glauca) over 100 years old whose leaf color changes with the weather. People often call it the"weather tree"。

The oriental oak is relatively common in southern China. On sunny days, the leaves are green. During long droughts or before rain, the leaves turn red. After the rain clears, the leaves return to their original green.

The oriental oak is magical because it is very sensitive to climate conditions, and the ratio of chlorophyll to anthocyanin contained in its leaves changes with the climate.

During long-term drought or just before rain, chlorophyll synthesis is blocked, so anthocyanin dominates in the leaves and the leaves gradually turn red.

After the rain clears, anthocyanin synthesis is again inhibited, and the leaf color returns to green. Local farmers use this information to learn about the weather and arrange their farm work, and they even revere it as a "sacred tree."

3. Four o'clock flower

Also called the rouge flower, it grows wild and is also planted by people in courtyards, and it is often cultivated across northern and southern China.

The four o'clock flower (Mirabilis jalapa) usually blooms in the evening and withers the next morning. Based on the time the flowers wither, you can judge the weather for that day. If the flowers wither as soon as dawn breaks, it foretells a sunny day. If the flowers wither later, it foretells an overcast and rainy day.

4. Pumpkin vine

The pumpkin vine originated in the region from Mexico to Central America and is widely cultivated around the world. It was introduced to China during the Ming Dynasty, and is now widely planted across the north and south.

The tip of the pumpkin vine usually grows slowly forward while pointing downward, but if on a summer morning you find that the tips of the pumpkin vines are generally pointing upward, it foretells that the weather will turn from sunny to rainy. If during overcast and rainy weather you find that the tips of the pumpkin vines are generally pointing downward, it foretells that the weather is about to clear.

Conclusion: The "weather forecasters" of the plant kingdom use their own language to pass on nature's messages to us, and though ordinary, they exist in an extraordinary way. Do you know any other plants that hide a "weather forecaster" attribute?
