Time and Temperature for Rhododendron Cuttings
The best time to take rhododendron cuttings is in spring and autumn, with May or October being the best. The temperature should be between 20~25°C, and they generally take about two months to root.
Preparation of Cutting Tools
Small flowerpot, loose and breathable soil, watering can, spray bottle, scissors,rooting powder (absolutely essential),plastic bag, thin rope or rubber band, small bamboo poles or twigs as thick as chopsticks
Steps for Rhododendron Cuttings:
Step one: Select healthy semi-lignified branches of the current year from the rhododendron, cut them to a length of about 8cm, then cut off the lower leaves and keep only 3-4 leaves at the top;
Step two: Soak the cut rhododendron branches in rooting powder solution for one day to ensure the branches have sufficient moisture and can root better;
Step three: On the same day you soak them in the rooting powder solution, prepare the cutting soil. The soil mix ratio is humus soil:river sand:peat soil=2:4:4. Then spray the mixed soil with water until moist. By the next day when you take cuttings, it should be just moist enough; cut 4-6 small twigs of 25-30cm for later use;
Step four: Insert the prepared rhododendron cuttings into the soil 3-4cm deep, press the soil around the cuttings firmly to ensure full contact between the soil and the cuttings; insert small twigs around the edge of the pot;
Step five: Water the planted rhododendron cuttings thoroughly once, then cover the entire flowerpot with a plastic bag, and tie the bag opening tightly with string or a rubber band;
Step six: Move the flowerpot to a bright place without direct sunlight for care.
Precautions
Try to keep the cut surface of the branch as flat as possible
The soil used for rhododendron cuttings must be loose and breathable, with good drainage
For the first 10 days after cutting, spray water on the leaves and the soil surface once or twice a day. Do not spray too much. Decide the number of times based on the climate and the air humidity inside the plastic bag, then keep the soil moist afterward
