Leaf cuttings

Time and temperature for Snake Plant cuttings

Choose spring, summer or autumn for Snake Plant cuttings; in terms of temperature, take cuttings when the air temperature is above 15°C. Under these conditions, roots will form in about one month!

Preparation of cutting tools

Small flower pot, loose and airy soil, watering can, spray bottle, scissors or blade, carbendazim,Rooting powder (absolutely essential)

Steps for Snake Plant cuttings:

Step one: prepare the carbendazim solution, then choose one or more long, thick, healthy Snake Plant leaves and cut them off from the base;

Step two: cut the removed leaves into small sections 6-8 cm long, then soak them in the carbendazim solution for half an hour, take them out and let them air-dry;

Step three: while the cut leaf sections are soaking, prepare the soil for cuttings, and coat the part of each dried leaf section that will go into the soil with rooting powder;

Step four: arrange the leaf sections neatly and insert them into the soil to a depth of about 3-4 cm, then spray water on the potting soil until the soil is moist;

Step five: place the planted Snake Plant cuttings in a cool, ventilated spot for care, and in about one month they will sprout.

  • Notes

  • After cutting off the leaves, it is best to disinfect the wound on the mother plant with carbendazim to prevent infection;

  • The standard for cutting soil is that it feels moist when grasped in the hand, and crumbles apart when you open your hand;

  • The removed leaf will not branch again from the cut point to grow new leaves;

  • For the leaf sections, it is best to mark the end of each section that faces up out of the soil, to avoid confusion and planting them upside down;

  • Just keep the pot slightly moist; do not water heavily, as this can cause the cuttings to rot and make the propagation fail;

  • Successful cuttings will send up tender shoots directly from the soil; new leaves will not grow from the cut leaf sections themselves;

  • For cuttings taken in early spring and late autumn, pay attention to keeping the sections warm; you can put a plastic bag over them to maintain the temperature, and do not water too much;

  • For summer cuttings, watch out for water loss being too fast; you can decide whether to water based on how soft or firm the leaves feel;
