Bougainvillea likes a warm and humid climate, is not cold-tolerant, and loves sufficient light; it is the city flower of Xiamen. Its bracts are large, brightly colored, and its flowering period lasts a long time. From a distance, bougainvillea looks like large butterflies dancing gracefully, very beautiful! It is often used for garden planting or potted ornamental display. The most common propagation method for bougainvillea is cuttings, and the survival rate is quite good as well. Let's take a look below at how to take bougainvillea cuttings!

Suitable Cutting Methods for Bougainvillea

Stem Cuttings

Time and Temperature for Bougainvillea Cuttings

Bougainvillea cuttings are generally taken in September--October and February--April of the following year. The temperature is relatively suitable, and mold activity is not strong, so wounds are not easily infected, and callus tissue easily forms new roots. Roots can form in about one month.

Tool Preparation

Bougainvillea, small flower pot, loose and breathable soil, watering can, gardening tools

Steps for Bougainvillea Cuttings:

Step One:Prepare a pot of bougainvillea with good growth, and choose a relatively thick, current-year woody branch about 50cm long as the cutting target. This is good for growing new roots and improving the survival rate;

Step Two:Cut the removed branch into small sections of about 10cm, then trim each section, leaving only 1-2 leaves at the top; it is also fine to have no leaves. Cut the part of each section that goes into the soil at an angle to increase the contact area with the soil. Because part of the selected branch has already become woody, there is no need to dry it in the sun; after trimming the cuttings, they can be planted right away;

Step Three:Insert the treated cuttings neatly into the soil, with about 4-6cm going into the soil;

Step Four:Water the planted bougainvillea thoroughly once, then place it in a cool, ventilated place for care.

  • Precautions

  • Keep the pot moist, but avoid water accumulation in the pot

  • Place the cuttings in a cool, ventilated place for about 15 days to recover, then move them to a place with sparse light for care. After one month, they can receive full-sun care

  • If the air is relatively dry during the chosen cutting time, spray the cuttings with water in the evening in a timely manner
