Yesterday I explained how to encourage amaryllis to bloom every year, but many friends said they do not even know how to grow amaryllis. So below I will introduce the simplest way to grow amaryllis; you only need to prepare a flower pot or a hydroponic container.

If you choose pot cultivation, you need to choose a well-draining terracotta pot, clay pot or ceramic pot with more drainage holes; it is best to choose a somewhat heavier container to prevent the amaryllis from becoming top-heavy after its flower stalk grows tall and constantly being blown over.

You can also choose hydroponic cultivation. You need to prepare a dedicated hydroponic container, place the purchased amaryllis bulb directly on top of the water container, add some clean water appropriately; the position must not be too high, and it can be grown by placing it in a warm, ventilated spot with bright light.

Before growing, you need to learn how to buy amaryllis bulbs. Choose bulbs that are plump and firm with no signs of rot. If the amaryllis bulb you buy is rotting, cut it promptly, then soak it in potassium permanganate solution, let it dry, and replant it. You can also choose different varieties; early-flowering or late-flowering types are both fine.

Before planting the amaryllis bulb you bought, first moisten the potting soil slightly, and plant after it is moist. The soil must have good drainage; if the soil stays wet for a long time or tends to waterlog, the amaryllis bulb will rot easily.

Be especially careful when planting. The bulb must not be planted too deep, and do not choose an overly large container for the pot, otherwise soil waterlogging can also easily cause root rot. The top 1/3 of the amaryllis bulb must be exposed above the soil surface; it must not be planted too deep, as only then will it bloom easily. Also, when covering the soil in the flower pot, do not fill it too full, otherwise watering will be difficult.

After planting amaryllis, place it in a suitable position. It needs about 6~8 hours of diffused light each day, and keep the environment cool and ventilated. Avoid growing it in a sealed space, and do not grow it in a place that is too shaded.

If you want the amaryllis plant shape to grow more graceful, you need to turn the pot regularly. Turn the flower pot every two weeks so the plant grows more evenly, because its flower stalk is also phototropic; if you do not turn the pot, it will grow very crooked.

After planting amaryllis, water it regularly. When the soil 3 cm below the surface is dry, you can water it. Its flowering period is very long. If you want to extend the flowering period, keep it away from heating and air conditioning, and you can slightly reduce light; too much light will shorten the flowering period.

Of course, also be careful not to spray water onto the flowers, otherwise the flowers will rot easily.
