These first days of autumn in Hangzhou are gloomy and chilly, without the crisp, refreshing feel of autumn in the north, not cute at all. At times like this, if the home has not a bit of sunshine and vitality, it truly feels like "autumn brings melancholy and loneliness."

So, Shaoyao recently really wants to make some changes at home, to change her mood. Shaoyao does not like big upheavals. Without knocking down walls or painting, is there a way to use simple elements to create a forest-like home?

By this standard, Shaoyao found a great role model. Foreign travel design blogger Erika Carlock's home is simple, yet gives people the feeling of vacationing in Bali, which can be said to be super likable and super easy to learn.

Bring the tropical rainforest into your home

"My home has white walls on all four sides, so I probably can't turn it into a tropical rainforest style, right?"

Of course not!! Erika Carlock's home also has white walls on all four sides, without painting trendy colors or putting up large floral wallpaper to boost the style factor. Using only plants and simple elements, she turned her small home into a tropical rainforest. One look and you can immediately start making changes!

Tall banana plants and palm plants,

paired with a daybed and hollow wrought iron tables and chairs,

make the courtyard look like a Bali homestay.

A healing and colorful living room,

gentle with a touch of vacation style,

lying on the sofa, closing your eyes and it's island coconut groves,

mmm, ten thousand percent satisfaction~

The bedroom also has white walls,

orange-pink bedding, soft without being too girly pink,

you'll want to dive right onto it after looking!

The teardrop-shaped mirror is both decorative and practical~

Compared with big projects that require painting walls or even demolishing walls to change the layout for a new style, Erika Carlock's method is effortless and money-saving.

After carefully studying her home, Shaoyao figured out the secret to her decorating style. She mainly put effort into these three areas:color coordination, plant pairing, and style statement-piece decorating.

If you also want to turn a dull home into a rainforest style like Erika Carlock's, what exactly should you do?

/ Color coordination /

The color coordination in home decor is just like flower arranging; it needs a main color and accent colors. In the home, the main color refers to the wall color covering the largest area, while accent colors are shown through small color blocks like furniture and decorative objects.

The general principles for main colors and accent colors in home decor:if the main color is light, the accent colors are dark; if the main color is dark, the accent colors are light. Accent colors generally should not exceed three types, to avoid too many colors visually causing conflict.

Light color scheme: main color white + accent colors blue, brown

Erika Carlock's home main color is white,

the living room's white curtains, cabinets, and flower pots

are also part of the main color composition.

For accent colors,

she chose blue and brown with lower saturation,

the floor and chairs are brown, the sofa is blue,

the two colors have a similar proportion.

It looks neither monotonous nor overly cluttered.

Replacing white with other light colors such as pink,

light gray and other colors also works the same way.

Dark color scheme: main color dark gray + accent colors white, yellow

If the walls are retro dark gray, dark green or other such color families,

the accent colors generally use brighter white,

the home floor can use beige close to white,

which can adjust the brightness of the space so the atmosphere is not too oppressive.

If you add one or two lively colors,

using decorative objects and wall art to add yellow, gold, etc.,

it can brighten the color of the whole home.

/ Plant pairing /

Why do other people's plants give the feel of a tropical rainforest, while yours end up looking like a neighborhood greenbelt? Plants are not something you can just buy randomly, green plants need height pairing, vase flowers need attention to style and color, and flower pots and vases also have their own rules.

Green plant pairing

Tall tropical plants paired with low-to-medium green plants, only then can your home look like a harmonious botanical garden.

Medium-to-tall green plants are suitable for placing in corners or beside cabinets and sofas,

taking up no space while also solving the awkwardness of dead corners.

In Erika Carlock's living room there are taller tropical plants,

such as areca palm, fiddle-leaf fig, dragon tree, etc.

Fiddle-leaf fig

Dragon tree

Dragon fruit cactus and banana plants,

placed indoors also have a great feel~

Low-to-medium green plants,

are suitable for placing directly on cabinets and windowsills,

or using wall-mounted or hanging methods,

with a well-arranged mix of heights.

Monstera and Calathea orbifolia have their own patterns,

flowing ferns, cacti and succulents, etc.,

are all good choices.

Sometimes the plants are chosen right, but the flower pot is wrong,

and it still looks a bit off.

For tall plants you can choose IKEA's Flådis basket,

and there are countless replicas on Taobao, with quality that is not bad either.

Cement pots or white ceramic pots,

will never go wrong no matter how you pair them.

For small plants, terracotta pots and simple ceramic pots,

are more common and very versatile.

Vase flower selection

Vase flowers have a finishing-touch effect on the whole space; a small vase can bring a full sense of happiness. In a rainforest-style home decor style, flowers with bright colors and unusual shapes are more suitable.

Bright yellow large flowers,

such as sunflowers, chrysanthemums, and pincushion flowers, are all very suitable.

Anthurium and bird of paradise with rather special shapes,

look great with just two stems placed casually.

Large round clustered flowers, such as dahlias and peonies,

can be arranged in a big bouquet.

For vase selection, combined vases are the most effortless.

For the pairing and recommendations of combined vases, Shaoyao has written about it before.

Golden vases, elegant and stylish.
