Lately I've often been talking about flowers and plants around Dad. Dad is a country person and doesn't know many of the flowers in the city. He said, why don't you get me a simple flower too, and I'll grow it for you to see. Haha, I was really touched at the time. A simple flower, the first thing that flashed through my mind was the moss rose (Portulaca grandiflora), so I immediately found a seller online and ordered a double-petaled moss rose. After 2 months, let's see how Dad has grown it?

The moss rose, as the name suggests, is a flower that blooms toward the place shone on by the sun. Seeing a moss rose is like seeing sunshine, like seeing hope, so the flower language of the moss rose is generally quite positive. Its blooming period is usually very long, from May to November, and in some areas of the south it can bloom all year round, which is also one of the reasons many flower-growing enthusiasts like it.

The environment in the village is quite good, and it's very convenient to get soil and such. He directly used soil from the field that had been fermented with chicken manure, very rich in nutrients. There are several chicken farms in the village, and every time after collecting the chickens and shoveling the manure, he goes to buy it, 10 yuan a bag, and after buying it he pours it into the field to compost, so the soil in that field becomes very fertile. The vegetables at home are all grown with this kind of soil, and they grow especially well.

Then he found a few clay pots, the more breathable kind, each pot about 20cm in diameter, and inserted the cuttings section by section, with each seedling about 3-4cm apart, and after watering with settling water, he put them in a shady place for 1 week. After that he put them all under the sun to let them grow freely. 2 months have passed, and now they're blooming with over 50 flowers, colorful and very beautiful.

Now that the flowers are growing so well, Dad says he'll pinch the tips in a few days to make them grow even more lush and abundantly blooming. Pinching the moss rose is much simpler than for other flowers like the kalanchoe. When the main branch grows fairly long, about six or seven centimeters, we pinch off the tip of the main branch, and before long a cluster of new shoots grows from the break, so the branches will grow especially numerous.

Actually, growing moss roses in city apartments is also very convenient. A sunny balcony is a great spot. In the city there may be no soil fermented with chicken manure, so we can use humus soil instead, and add some river sand or perlite to increase the soil's breathability, so the moss rose will grow very lush.

When the moss rose is growing very lush, before it blooms, we can water it once with an organic nutrient solution around the edge of the pot soil, so the moss rose will bloom even more vigorously, and the flowers on each branch will be plump and large, blooming continuously all year round.

If you're a "black thumb" at growing flowers, then try growing moss roses, give them a little sunshine and they'll shine, and they'll definitely give you a different experience.
