Camellia, also known as mountain camellia, is a general term for various plants and horticultural varieties of the genus Camellia in the family Theaceae. The petals are bowl-shaped, divided into single or double forms; single camellias are mostly original flower species, and double camellias can have as many as 60 petals. Camellias come in flower varieties of varying degrees of red, purple, white, and yellow, and there are even multi-colored variegated camellias, while the flowering branches can reach a height of 4 m. They naturally prefer warm, humid environments. The flowering period is relatively long, blooming from October to May of the following year, with the peak blooming period usually from January to March.

Because of its graceful plant form, dark green and glossy leaves, and brilliantly colorful flowers, it is treasured by the world's horticultural circles. There are extremely many camellia varieties; it is a traditional ornamental flower of China, ranking eighth among the "Ten Famous Flowers," and is also one of the world's precious flowering trees and shrubs.

1. Camellias like loose, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Neither clayey nor alkaline soil is suitable. Moreover, the potting soil is best changed once every two years; when changing the pot, be careful to place base fertilizer at the bottom of the pot, and a small amount of bone meal, chicken manure, soybean cake, and other materials can be used. The best time for changing the pot is spring.

2. Camellias like a semi-shaded, semi-sunny environment and prefer warmth and humidity. Their optimum growing temperature is 15°C to 25°C, so they are suitable for a semi-shaded environment or one with scattered light. In winter, sunlight near a south-facing window is relatively abundant, so placing them near a south-facing windowsill is more suitable. During high summer temperatures, spray water mist on the branches and leaves and around them to lower the temperature and prevent dryness. In hot weather, shade them in a timely manner as well.

3. Camellias have fleshy roots, and too much watering easily causes root rot, so it must be done in moderation. During drought and high temperatures, water the leaf surface twice a day. Camellias like fertilizer; apart from the flowering period, you can usually apply light fertilizer frequently, but never apply concentrated fertilizer, otherwise it easily damages the roots and causes the plant to be burned to death. Fertilizer should be mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, with nitrogen fertilizer secondary, and fertilization should be kept away from the flower roots to prevent root burn. This promotes vigorous growth and a robust plant.

Camellias have relatively poor adaptability, and during the period of budding and flower bud growth, the position of the pot should not be moved casually, so as to avoid the leaves that were originally on the shady side suddenly contacting strong light and dropping. Usually, often spray the leaf surface with nutrient solution diluted in water. This maintains its humidity and nutrient absorption.

Camellias need suitable fertilization

Camellias have a large flower quantity, brilliant flower colors, and lush branches and leaves. If you want camellias to bloom 3 times a year, flower lovers need to learn 1 technique. This technique is to meet the growth needs of camellias and scientifically supplement nutrients to camellias according to the different seasons and different physiological activity periods.

1. During the vigorous growth period, apply sufficient fertilizer

Fertilizer is the food of camellias and must be applied at the right time and in the right amount. Flower lovers should apply sufficient fertilizer during the vigorous growth period (between May and June), and apply less fertilizer during slow growth periods, such as early spring, early autumn, and late autumn. For fertilization, flower organic nutrient solution can be used; generally, water the camellia once a week, diluted 500 times, and the camellia will grow vigorously.

2. Apply liquid fertilizer in dry seasons

In dry weather, camellias need frequent watering. Every 4-5 days, a little fertilizer can be applied in the water and poured along with the water, achieving light but frequent application, which is beneficial to the development and growth of camellias.

3. During the rainy season, it is suitable to apply powdered fertilizer

During the rainy season, the potting soil is often wet and does not dry, and liquid fertilizer is very easily lost, often resulting in the fertilizer being ineffective and efforts being wasted. Therefore, flower lovers should apply powdered fertilizer during the rainy season. For example, sun-dried, ground, and sifted chicken manure fertilizer, duck manure fertilizer, and so on. After the rain stops, apply this kind of fertilizer to the surface of the potting soil, and wait for the fertilizer liquid to enter the soil with the water and gradually be absorbed by the camellia.

4. Apply nitrogen fertilizer during the leaf bud sprouting period

After the camellia flowers fade and the leaf buds sprout, apply nitrogen fertilizer in a timely manner to promote sprouting and leaf growth.

5. Apply phosphorus fertilizer during the flower bud differentiation period

When camellias reach the period between May and June, the new branches and leaves have initially formed, and flower buds begin to form on the new branches. This is the time to apply phosphorus fertilizer to promote flower bud formation and development and enlargement.

6. Before winter begins, it is suitable to apply potassium fertilizer

When camellias reach the late autumn season, growth slows, physiological activity weakens, and the fertilizer requirement is very small. In order to increase the camellia's own cold resistance, it is suitable to apply potassium fertilizer 1-2 times before winter begins, which helps the camellia overwinter safely.

Camellias also need proper pruning

1. Cut off diseased branches and leggy branches; for the branches to be pruned, buds need to be appropriately removed to promote branching. This kind of pruning can maintain better growth for the camellia, and the flowers bloom relatively large and with brilliant colors.

2. Carry out light pruning every year; just cut off some excessively leggy branches.

3. Camellias are not suitable for pruning too early in winter. If camellias are pruned too early, the weather being too cold will freeze and damage the camellia and affect growth. The best pruning is from mid-January to late January.

4. During the period after pruning and before new buds sprout, it is best to apply a compound fertilizer mainly of nitrogen fertilizer once, and spray a foliar fertilizer once when the new buds sprout. This can make spring sprouting more vigorous.

5. If the camellia is planted in the ground, and the winter temperature is relatively warm, then before pruning (in November),

take about 12 times the ground diameter of the camellia's main trunk as the diameter, with the main trunk as the center, and cut off the lateral roots in a circle around the main trunk, to promote the sprouting of more new roots and lay the foundation for better growth the following year.
