In autumn the clouds are light and the breeze is gentle. Northerners find this kind of weather especially comfortable, and this season is not only great for people to live in, it is also very suitable for vegetables to grow. Today Teacher Xiaoye will tell you which types of vegetables are most suitable for planting in September!

NO1: Leafy greens sprout as soon as the seeds are scattered

September is very suitable for planting leafy greens, and it is no exaggeration at all to say they grow as soon as the seeds are scattered. This season is very suitable for the growth of fast-growing leafy greens such as: A-choy, lettuce, garland chrysanthemum, arugula, baby bok choy, and so on.

Notes:

Whether on a balcony or in a vegetable garden, if the weather happens to bring an autumn drought, be sure to keep moisture sufficient. After scattering the seeds, you must water thoroughly, otherwise no matter how easy leafy greens are to grow, they will not sprout without water!

NO2: Plant scallions at the Autumn Equinox

September will welcome the most iconic solar term of autumn, the Autumn Equinox. This year the Start of Autumn was on September 23. After the Autumn Equinox the weather will gradually turn from cool to cold, and the vegetable most suitable for planting in this season is scallions.

Notes:

Scallions can be planted using the furrow sowing method. After sowing, be sure to water thoroughly, which can ensure the soil stays moist. Vegetables similar to scallions, such as celtuce and onions, can all use this method!

NO3: Plant garlic after the Autumn Equinox

Garlic is a vegetable every household loves to eat. It can be eaten raw and also used for stir-frying. In the north, garlic is an overwintering vegetable. Overwintering garlic not only has high yield but also tastes very good. It is very suitable to sow 25 days before the Hoar Frost Descends.

Notes:

Overwintering garlic is generally sown around 25 days before the Hoar Frost Descends, that is, sown 25 days before low-temperature dormancy. Before dormancy it grows to a height of about 15 cm with four leaves, and at this point overwintering is safest. If planted too early it tends to bolt prematurely; if planted too late the seedlings are too weak. Neither is good for overwintering.

NO.4: Cherry radishes can be harvested in 30 days

September is the golden period for planting cherry radishes. Their growth cycle is very short, taking only about 25-30 days from planting to harvest, and cherry radishes like cool weather. Planting cherry radishes this month not only gives them a bright, vigorous look, but also a crisp, tender taste with not the slightest bit of spiciness! Suitable for eating raw or pickling as sauerkraut!

Of course, similar ones you can plant include white radish and Xiaowuying radish!

NO.5: Plant overwintering spinach at the end of the month

In the north, spinach is generally grown as an overwintering crop, sown in late autumn, dormant in winter, and harvested after it turns green again in spring. Spinach is very cold-hardy, so even at minus ten-odd degrees in winter it will not freeze to death. By spring, before other vegetables are harvested, spring spinach can already be served at the table. So in the north, spinach planted at the end of September and harvested in spring will have a very crisp taste!

Notes:

Spinach is best planted at the end of September. Planted too early it tends to bolt; planted too late the spinach seedlings are not suited to overwintering. So in North China, planting at the end of September is just right!

The above is what Teacher Xiaoye has introduced for everyone.
