Autumn flower cuttings have their rules, and these flowers are exceptions

The Complete Guide to Home Gardening
Teacher Xiao Ye teaches you all kinds of gardening knowledge!
In autumn, temperatures drop and the weather turns cool, making it a great season for taking cuttings of all kinds of flowers. As long as you choose the right branches, a casual stick in the soil can turn one pot into many. But not all flowers are suitable for cuttings in autumn. This flower is an exception; even if you take cuttings in autumn, they will not survive.
Autumn is the season for admiring chrysanthemums, but by no means the season for taking cuttings.
Chrysanthemum
Suitable cutting time:
Any time from April to July works, with May to June being best, when the survival rate is highest and rooting is fastest.
Unsuitable cutting time:
In autumn and winter, temperatures are lower and the plants' vitality is low, so it is not suitable for cuttings.
Cutting method:
1. Select thick, sturdy branches with a growing tip, 8-10 cm long, preferably with three nodes.
2. Cut off the tenderest part at the top, and make a slanted cut at the lower end right below a node, where nutrients are concentrated and rooting is easiest. Each cutting should have only 1/2 of a large leaf; keeping too many leaves makes it easy to lose water and wilt, affecting survival.
3. Insert the cutting about 3 cm into the soil; too deep will affect rooting. Press the soil firm, and never leave it loose. After inserting, water thoroughly and mist once a day; never let the medium dry out. Provide shade for the first 15 days, then gradually expose it to diffused light, and after one month it can be transplanted.
Flowers suitable for cuttings in autumn
Rose
Suitable cutting time:
Softwood cutting method: April, September, or September and October, when branch vitality is strong and the temperature is suitable.
Hardwood cutting method: can be done from the rose's dormant period until it sprouts in spring; temperature must be well controlled during cutting.
Bud cutting: the most suitable season for bud cutting is spring, when new buds have just sprouted.
Unsuitable cutting time:
In summer's high temperatures, it is very difficult for buds to emerge, and the humid weather easily breeds bacteria, resulting in a low survival rate.
Key cutting points:
Keep 3-5 small leaves on the cutting, as this helps rooting; after cutting, be sure to keep the soil moist.
Winter jasmine
Suitable cutting time:
Most suitable for autumn cuttings; it is a relatively easy plant to root from cuttings.
Unsuitable cutting time:
Avoid taking cuttings during the hot summer season.
Key cutting points:
1. When taking cuttings, select semi-lignified branches, each cutting about 10-15 cm, and insert into sandy soil.
2. After inserting, keep the humidity up; roots will form in about two to three weeks.
Gardenia
Suitable cutting time:
In the first half of the year, April; in the second half, August to September.
Unsuitable cutting time:
Summer's high temperatures and winter's too-low temperatures are both unsuitable for cuttings.
Key cutting points:
Select one- or two-year-old mature branches, cut into 10-15 cm lengths, and keep 3-4 leaves to reduce water evaporation. The lower part of the cutting must be cut at a slant (at an angle of about 45 degrees) to increase its contact area with the soil, and the cut surface should be smooth. Water thoroughly, provide shade, and roots will form in about 30 days.
Tip: Autumn is a good season for fertilizing, and also a good season for fertilizing; you can appropriately apply microbial flower-specific fertilizer to your flowers to ensure vigorous growth and a pot bursting with blooms.
