"Start of Autumn" has passed, and summer is about to fade away. At this time of year, some summer vegetables like eggplant, chili peppers, and green beans are basically almost fully harvested, and gardening friends are busy again for the next round of planting. Xiaoye recommends several vegetables suitable for planting in September. With them, you won't worry about having no vegetables to eat in the second half of the year!
1. Radish
As the old saying goes, "Eat radish in winter and ginger in summer." How can you not eat radish in winter? Although radish can be planted all year round, for farmer friends, radish planted in autumn using traditional cultivation methods is the most delicious, especially after being touched by frost.
Therefore, starting from late August, radish can be planted, and this can continue until mid-October!
2. Chinese Cabbage
There is a folk saying, "Radish in the first fu, cabbage in the second fu." And since you've planted radish, how can you do without Chinese cabbage? In the depths of winter, eating Chinese cabbage that has been touched by frost is sweeter and crispier.
Generally, after the Start of Autumn, Chinese cabbage can be sown. But when the heat of early autumn has not yet faded, sun protection work is still needed, especially after the seedlings emerge, remember to water frequently, and also avoid heavy rain damaging the seedlings. At the same time, baby bok choy can also be sown!
3. Rape (rapeseed greens)
If you like eating leafy greens, you can plant some small rape greens. This vegetable is a fast-growing leafy green, and its growth cycle is not long. Generally, from sowing to harvest it takes only about forty days.
It is recommended to sow in early September for the best results, so that by early October you can roughly harvest them, and this is exactly the season when leafy greens are relatively scarce.
4. Cilantro
Cilantro is practically a must-have for countless hot pot lovers. Friends who plan to grow cilantro should start getting ready.
Generally, the best time to plant cilantro is after mid-August. Because cilantro has fewer pests and diseases, and it is also easy to manage. The planting method can use direct sowing. The growth cycle is generally about 50 days.
5. Spinach
Spinach is known as the "nutrition model student." It is rich in carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin K, minerals (calcium, iron, etc.), coenzyme Q10, and many other nutrients. Children can eat a bit more spinach, as it helps with growing taller.
Autumn spinach can be sown in mid-to-late August, because this vegetable grows relatively slowly and generally takes about 60 days before it can be harvested.
6. Green Beans
Since they are called four-season beans, they can certainly be sown in all four seasons. But green beans are not tolerant of frost and are also afraid of high temperatures, so sowing around the Start of Autumn is the best time.
If growing indoors, it is recommended to choose short, sturdy varieties. In addition, friends can also plant autumn cowpeas.
Besides the above vegetables, you can also plant garlic, chives, scallions, autumn cucumbers, celery, lettuce, and so on. Of course, the climate varies from place to place, so Xiaoye suggests choosing the appropriate sowing time according to local conditions.
