Division methods

There are two types of spider plant division: one is stem-and-leaf division, which means separating the little spider plantlets on the runners; the other is root division.

Stem-and-leaf division

1. After the mother spider plant produces plantlets, wait until the little plantlets on the runners grow to about 8cm, then cut them off, keeping two stem nodes.

2. Prepare loose, fertile soil, bury the cut plantlets 1~2cm into the soil, water to keep it moist, and they will take root in about 3 days

3. After rooting, water once a day, provide plenty of ventilation, keep them in bright indirect light, and with no special effort they will soon fill the pot!

Root division

1. Choose a robustly growing spider plant, use a small trowel to gently loosen the soil around the plant, take the whole spider plant out, gently shake off the soil, and be careful not to damage the roots.

Division steps

1. Remove from pot:

Dig a robustly growing succulent out of the soil, being careful not to damage the roots.

2. Divide:

Clean off the soil, and you can directly pull the clustered succulents apart by hand, roots and all.

3. Potting:

Let the roots dry for 2 hours, then plant the separated mother plant and small plantlets in pots respectively, keeping the soil slightly moist, not too wet.

4. Care:

Place the pots in a ventilated spot with indirect light, and increase the light after a week.

Benefits of division

For spring-blooming woody plants like tree peonies, herbaceous peonies, winter jasmine and redbud, autumn is the best time to divide them. The temperature is suitable, rooting is fast and abundant, and the growth the following year will be much better.

Prerequisite for division

Tree peonies to be divided must have grown for more than 3 years; 4~5-year-old original plants are best. Plants that are too young or grafted plants are not easy to keep alive after division.

Division steps

1. Dig out the whole tree peony, remove the soil, and let it dry in the sun for 1~2 days so the roots lose water and soften; this way the roots are less likely to be damaged during division.

2. Start dividing from where the root texture meets; each daughter plant usually has 3~4 branches, retaining an intact root system.

3. Apply a small amount of sulfur powder to the wounds, then replant the mother plant and daughter plants into the soil. Make sure the roots stand upright, firm the soil, and water several more times.
