A flower, a leaf, a branch, a bamboo - seemingly ordinary things, through the skillful hands of Hu Xiaozhao, chairman of Chongqing Gujinting Culture Development Co., Ltd. and Chongqing Guxinxiang Crafts Co., Ltd., are turned into exquisite works of art that leave people amazed.
Hu Xiaozhao began developing plant paintings in 2013, with materials selected from reeds, wheat straw, bamboo shoot shells, twigs and more from Kaizhou Wetland Park. Using the natural luster of plants and their property of being torn into strands, he goes through 16 processes including scorching for color, cutting and pasting to create plant paintings that are ingeniously conceived and remarkably lifelike.
In recent years, in order to better promote Kaizhou, Hu Xiaozhao has created cultural tourism products rich in Kaizhou symbols. In his creative process, he cleverly incorporates Kaizhou elements, comprehensively spreading Kaizhou's beautiful scenery and culture, attracting tourists to visit Kaizhou. Landmarks representing Kaizhou's local characteristics such as Kaizhou Juzi Garden, Wenfeng Pagoda, Wind and Rain Corridor Bridge, Wetland Park and Nine Arch Bridge often appear in his works.
Besides making plant paintings, Hu Xiaozhao is also passionate about Kaizhou Han embroidery. Kaizhou Han embroidery has a history of more than 1,800 years and has been listed in the second batch of the national intangible cultural heritage list. Its needlework differs from the four great famous embroidery styles of Su embroidery, Shu embroidery, Xiang embroidery and Yue embroidery. It adopts a set of stitches including laying, flattening, weaving, spacing, pressing, cabling, blending, coiling, covering, padding and fastening, with "flat gold inlaid embroidery" as its main form of expression, achieving layered color breaking, distinct gradations and strong contrasts.
Inheriting the classical and creating the classic. The innovative Hu Xiaozhao integrates more Kaizhou elements into Kaizhou Han embroidery, using Kaizhou's beautiful scenery as original images - namely the "Eight Scenes" of Kaizhou: the Three Arch Bridge, Old City Wall, Old Alleys and Laoguanzui of the old town, and Hanfeng Lake, Kaizhou Juzi Garden, Xunsheng Bridge and Wenfeng Pagoda of the new town. These Han embroidery works are bright in color, exquisite in composition and unique in creativity, full of deep hometown affection, giving countless Kaizhou people a feeling of being there in person while admiring them, and inspiring many outsiders to yearn for a visit after viewing them.
Cultural and tourism integration is the main theme of the times. As a native of Kaizhou, Hu Xiaozhao is determined to bring Kaizhou to the world. In his creations, filled with hometown sentiment, he incorporates Kaizhou elements into daily items such as table lamps, notebooks, T-shirts, bookmarks and handicrafts. He promotes "Kaizhou symbols" through the form of art, and with sincere hometown affection creates numerous cultural tourism products that "keep homesickness alive."
