To grow orchids, first grow the roots - this is something Haoshe Farmer often tells fellow orchid growers. As long as the orchid's root system is healthy, there is no fear that the seedlings will not grow well or that it will fail to bloom beautifully. Whether orchid roots are robust or not, we often judge by the crystal tips. Healthy crystal tips are very beautiful, while orchid root crystal tips infected by disease will turn black and rot.

Do orchids have crystal tips all year round? Yesterday a fellow orchid grower accidentally knocked over a pot of orchids and found there were no crystal tips - the orchid roots were yellow. He thought something had gone wrong with the orchid, so he reached out to Haoshe Farmer to discuss it. His orchid was potted this year and has been growing quite well, so why are there no crystal tips?

In fact, plant growth follows its own laws. Over the long course of evolution, they have long since become one with the seasons and climate. Their sensitivity to seasonal changes and climate shifts has long surpassed that of us humans. In the four seasons of each year, which part should grow in which season follows a pattern.

Take Cymbidium goeringii as an example. Every year in February is its flowering period, and during this time the soil temperature is still not enough for root growth. So the orchid's root system has not yet sprouted new growth. After the flowering period, the plant has consumed a great deal of energy and urgently needs the roots to draw nutrients from the soil, and by then the soil temperature has also risen again, so after flowering the first thing the orchid pushes out is the crystal tips. This is why we often find a large number of crystal tips emerging from orchid roots after the flowering period.

In late spring and early summer, the orchid plant's main task is growing new seedlings. The demands of the upper part of the plant further stimulate root growth - they must strive to grow and draw more nutrients to ensure the new seedlings survive. Orchid roots also grow fastest during this period. The intense heat of summer causes the entire orchid plant to pause growth, and the root system is the same - the crystal tips gradually age and are no longer transparent. This is also why Haoshe Farmer has always advised fellow orchid growers not to fertilize in summer.

Orchid roots will undergo a growth process in autumn, but it is not as obvious as in spring, nor will many crystal tips appear. This is because after late autumn the soil temperature gradually drops, and the orchid roots need to age themselves - the tender crystal tips of spring cannot withstand the cold. So if you unpot now and find that the orchid roots have no crystal tips, do not worry that the roots are abnormal. In fact, this is a very normal natural phenomenon.
