Reasons for Soft Leaves on Christmas Cactus and How to Fix Them

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
There are many reasons why a Christmas cactus's leaves go soft. If it is caused by overwatering, you need to reduce watering and then place it in a cool, well-ventilated environment; if it is caused by underwatering, you need to water it normally and wait for it to recover. If it is caused by fertilizer burn, you need to flush the fertilizer out by watering, or repot the plant, cut off the rotten roots, and then replant and care for it again.

I. Causes of Softening

1. When a Christmas cactus's leaves go soft, you can basically determine that its root system has been damaged, so the roots cannot absorb water normally, causing the leaves to dehydrate and go soft.

2. The so-called leaves of the Christmas cactus are actually its stems, and the leaves have completely degenerated. To conserve water, it stores a certain amount of water in these leaf-like stem segments. The surface of the stem segments can carry out water metabolism, but when the roots at the bottom cannot supply enough water while the stem segments above continue their normal water metabolism, over time this creates an imbalance.

II. Solutions

1. If the cause is overwatering, reduce watering and place it in a cool, well-ventilated environment so it can gradually recover. If it is too dry, water it normally and slowly wait for it to grow new roots, which will achieve the goal of recovery.

2. If the fertilizer burn is mild, you can flush the fertilizer out by watering to reduce the concentration of strong or raw fertilizer in the soil. If this is not convenient to do, you need to repot it, remove its rotten roots at the same time, and then place it back in a cool, well-ventilated spot for careful management to encourage new roots to sprout, and the leaves will return to normal.
