Azaleas are also called yingshanhong, or mountain pomegranate. There are many wild azaleas in the countryside. Because they bloom all over the mountains and hills, with bright red flowers, they got the name yingshanhong. They generally bloom in spring. Now there are many types of azaleas, and the flower colors are becoming more and more varied: red, white, pink, very beautiful and gorgeous. How should azaleas be grown to thrive and bloom in a full pot?
For an azalea you bring home, it is best if it was grown in its original soil, not one that was just planted. If you want to repot it, it is best to keep the soil ball and old soil around the roots. Do not remove the soil from the roots, and do not trim the roots or anything like that, otherwise it will be very hard for it to establish. If planted with the soil ball, it will adapt to the new environment easily and will not drop leaves or flower buds.
Azaleas are suited to acidic soil rich in humus, so occasionally sprinkle a little ferrous sulfate into the soil, or water with a little diluted white vinegar, to make the soil acidic. Only then can azaleas grow vigorously and bloom abundantly.
Watering azaleas is very important. You can neither give too much water nor let them stay dry for a long time, because their roots are very fine and weak, not developed enough. Too much water easily causes root rot, yellow leaves and leaf drop; too little water means moisture cannot keep up, and the leaves wilt, and so on. So when you see the potting soil is dry, water promptly.
In summer, to keep azaleas in better condition and their leaves a pretty tender green, do not put them under direct blazing sun. It is best to place them under other taller plants to shade them. After watering, be sure to ensure ventilation and let the wind blow through, otherwise waterlogged soil easily causes leaf drop.
In spring and autumn, water a bit more; when the temperature is low, reduce watering. No matter the season, open the windows for ventilation and air exchange. In both spring and autumn, you can give azaleas some light fertilizer, such as cake fertilizer water, decomposed chicken manure fertilizer, and so on.
In summer, when it is hot, azaleas must be watered promptly. In winter, if the temperature is not especially low and does not drop below minus 10°C, they can be left outdoors to overwinter. In the area where Xiaoya lives, it snows lightly in winter, but the azaleas placed on the terrace, with no warmth measures at all, still do just fine.
