Potted green plants are an essential decorative touch for home life. Keeping some flowers and plants at home has many benefits - it beautifies the room and lifts your mood. "Flower Sound Potted Plant Diary · Issue 1278" introduces you to a super easy-to-grow woody flowering plant.

Today's featured plant

The scorching summer has passed, and the weather is gradually turning cooler. Now is the season for growing flowers, and they take root very easily. The flower introduced to you today is called begonia acetosa, a popular indoor potted flower in the north, especially in Northeast China. It is beautiful and easy to grow, and has an excellent reputation among flower lovers.

Begonia acetosa

Begonia acetosa, also known as bamboo-joint begonia, is a perennial shrub plant in the genus Begonia. The leaves are large, dark green on the front with small round white dots, and dark red on the back; the flowers range from red to pink, in axillary or pendulous cymes. It is native to Brazil, has been introduced in southern China, and in the north it is mostly grown indoors as an ornamental potted plant.

Extremely long flowering period

The flowers of begonia acetosa grow in strings, like pink grapes, hanging among the branches. In Northeast China it is also called "grape lotus". Its natural flowering period is from spring to autumn. If cultivated indoors with ample light and heating in winter, it will also bloom in winter. Although a single flower lasts only a few days, its blooming continuity is very good - one wave has just faded and another rises.

It can grow into a "big tree"

Begonia acetosa grows vigorously. If not pruned in time, even a potted plant can grow to more than 1.5 m, and its branching is decent, with no need for pinching. It tolerates pruning very well and is woody, so skilled flower lovers often train it into a bonsai tree, raising its ornamental value to another level.

Easy to cultivate

Begonia acetosa is very robust in nature and highly adaptable to the environment. It is shade-tolerant and can be grown indoors without problems; scattered light is enough to meet its growth and flowering requirements. Daily care is also very easy. Its demand for fertilizer and water is not high; water it after the soil dries out, and apply a light fertilizer once a month.

Its propagation ability is extremely strong. Like succulents, it can be propagated from cuttings of branches. First remove the branch, insert it into clean water, and it will root in about 15 days, then transplant it into a flower pot. It is not cold-tolerant. In southern China and the South China region it can be planted in the ground, while in areas north of the Yangtze River it needs to be moved indoors to overwinter in winter.
