I believe that flower lovers who have been reading Lan Yao's articles these past few days must have developed a strong interest in peonies and are eager to try growing a few, right?

But do not rush. Our country is so vast that not every region is suitable for growing peonies. Before planting, first find out whether your region falls within the areas suitable for growing peonies.

Which regions are suitable for growing peonies?

We all know that Luoyang peonies are very famous. Luoyang peonies originated in the Tang Dynasty and have a history of more than 1,300 years. Although Heze peonies started relatively late, Heze peonies bloom larger and produce more flowers. So nowadays peony seedlings mostly come from Heze, Shandong.

Peonies can tolerate low temperatures of -30°C, so there is no problem growing them in northern regions.

The suitable flowering temperature for peonies is 16°C-20°C. Above 25°C, peonies enter a semi-dormant state. When the temperature is above 4°C, the flower buds gradually swell. Before flowering, they need to go through 2-3 months of low-temperature vernalization, at a vernalization temperature of 1°C-10°C.

If peonies do not go through low-temperature vernalization, it is very difficult for them to bloom. Based on this characteristic, some warm southern regions are not suitable for growing peonies. If the winter temperature cannot stay below 10°C for 2-3 months, peonies cannot complete vernalization, and therefore cannot bloom, so they can only be kept as foliage plants.
