Podocarpus macrophyllus is also called Luohanshan, Tushan, it is an evergreen tree, with needle-like leaves, straight branches, evergreen all year round, and elegant posture, generally grown as a bonsai, if grown well, its growth rate is very fast. How to grow potted Podocarpus?

To grow Podocarpus, you don't need to spend money to buy one, because there are two ways to propagate it, one is sowing with seeds, the other is cutting propagation with branches:

Pick some mature Podocarpus seeds, choose slightly acidic, loose and breathable sandy loam soil, spread a layer of fine sand on the surface, then sow the seeds, after watering thoroughly, cover with a layer of plastic film or dry grass, shade and keep moist, and remove the cover after germination.

The other method is also very simple, just pick some Podocarpus branches and take them back for direct cutting, especially soft branches, semi-lignified branches are very easy to root by cutting. One Podocarpus can be cut into many pots.

Keep about ten cm in length, leave one or two leaves, insert into the soil, water thoroughly and do not expose to the sun, cutting in September is just right, the survival rate is very high. Generally roots grow in just over twenty days.

Podocarpus likes a semi-shaded environment, likes warmth, and cannot be exposed to strong sun. The soil for growing Podocarpus is suitable to be loose, fertile, breathable and well-drained slightly acidic sandy soil.

It is generally suitable to plant or transplant in spring in March or April. If planting small seedlings, be sure to bring the old soil, the soil ball, so that it adapts to the pot faster, survives more easily, and the growth rate will be especially fast.

Before planting, the branches and leaves can be pruned a bit, so as not to take away nutrients. Choose a pot with good breathability, you can use a purple clay pot, or an ordinary tile pot or ceramic pot. Use porcelain pots less. When watering normally, do not let the pot soil become waterlogged, but do not let it lack water for a long time either, only then can it grow quickly and robustly.

Because Podocarpus is mainly grown for its leaves, only with lush branches and leaves can it look good. When fertilizing normally, use more nitrogen fertilizer and slightly less phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. Normally you can prune and tend it a bit, and the plant shape will become more beautiful as it grows.

Generally, the fertilizing time is chosen in spring. During the growing period, you can apply some diluted alum fertilizer water every half a month, and you can also use cake fertilizer, or fermented and diluted manure and urine fertilizer, and you can also often spray some diluted urea and 3% beer, which can make the leaves grow thick and green, beautiful and lush.

Repot once every two or three years, replace half of the old soil, and add new fertile, loose and breathable soil.

In winter, Podocarpus stops growing and enters dormancy, so it is not suitable to fertilize or water too much. With a winter temperature of about five degrees, it can overwinter safely.
